The Colts made four roster moves on Saturday, promoting former Titans DE Bo Schobel to the active roster and releasing WR John Standeford. They also released CB Tanard Davis from the practice squad and re-signed RB Kory Chapman.
By midweek, the Colts knew that defensive end Josh Thomas was unlikely to play against the Texans due to a hip flexor problem that has bothered him for a couple of weeks. That left the Colts with just three defensive ends on the depth chart. ColtPower projected that the team would activate the former Titans DE from the practice squad as a result of the shortage earlier this week.
To make room for Schobel on the roster, the Colts surprisingly exposed third-year wide receiver John Standeford to the waiver wire. With Brandon Stokley cleared for action on Sunday, the Colts evidently believed they had enough depth at wide receiver. And with them holding no less than five injured players on the roster -- RB Dede Dorsey, DT Corey Simon, LB Freddie Keiaho, TE Ben Hartsock and OG Ryan Lilja -- the team's ability to promote players from the practice squad without releasing a talented player is becoming increasingly difficult.
The Colts' re-signing of RB Kory Chapman and release of CB Tanard Davis was a curious one since less than a week ago they added Davis to the practice squad and let Chapman go.
The team had starting CB Nick Harper and rookie Tim Jennings a bit banged up earlier in the week, and both were listed as questionable on the team's injury report this week, so Davis' addition to the practice squad may have been a short-term precautionary measure. However, since practice squad members participate on the scout team, simulating the week's upcoming opponent, Davis may have specific attributes and skills that closely matched up with a key player on the Texans squad. So he may have been brought back just for this week to help the team get a more accurate look at their opponent for their home opener.
