Cornerback Kelvin Hayden continues to inspire confidence at the left cornerback position, making a really nice play and tipping a pass away on a 30-yard pass attempt from Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison during the team's wide receivers versus defensive backs drill.
Former Browns defensive back Antonio Perkins put a nasty lick on running back Luke Lawton after he made a 15-yard catch. But Lawton had a spotlight moment as well, putting a tremendous lead block on a defender for Joseph Addai during an 11-on-11 goal line running play. The sound of the pads hitting as Lawton made contact with his victim could be heard all over the field.
Right cornerback Marlin Jackson and weakside linebacker Freddy Keiaho converged to break up a 10-yard pass intended for DeDe Dorsey at the goal line.
Defensive tackle Ed Johnson out of Penn State continues to make the most of his opportunity now that Anthony McFarland's starting spot is up for grabs. Johnson worked alongside Raheem Brock on the first team defense during Tuesday morning's session. He showed good pursuit coming down the line of scrimmage on an inside run during a 7-on-7 drill. DeDe Dorsey was the recipient of a real pop as Johnson moved down the line to make the play.
There was plenty of good action during Tuesday afternoon's 11-on-11 goal-line
drills as all four quarterbacks tried to move their units into the end zone.
Peyton Manning hit Reggie Wayne for a 12-yard slant for a touchdown while backup Jim Sorgi flipped a short pass to Luke Lawton for a score. Manning connected earlier in the day on a pair of long passes of roughly 40 yards to Marvin Harrison and Wayne during 7-on-7 drills.
Josh Betts missed on an opportunity for a touchdown high in the back of the end zone to tight end Bryan Fletcher as Norman LeJeune came in late to tip the ball away. But the first-year quarterback then connected with wide receiver Cro Thorpe for a 15-yard touchdown catch.
Mike McGann, the first-year player out of Temple, didn't fare quite as well. He was picked off at the goal line by Antoine Bethea, snatched away a bobbled ball for an interception. T.J. Rushing also picked off McGann while guarding the middle area of the end zone.
