Postgame Quotes: Colts

Colts head coach Tony Dungy, quarterback Peyton Manning and safety Bob Sanders spoke to the media following the team's 37-10 win over Detroit Saturday night. Here are some of the highlights...

HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY

General comments...

"We won a preseason game. I thank the team for winning so we wouldn't have to answer those questions. There were a lot of good things out there. Our third preseason game, we had some long drives on offense where we kind of created some problems and were able to overcome them. I thought our defense did a good job of going out there and playing aggressively. We saw some young guys show up on the special teams. So other than the two fumbles with our young receivers, it was a pretty good day's work."

On players' performances...

"A lot of guys did well from the areas we were looking at. I thought Tim Jennings went in and played real well with the second group as a nickel-back and did some good things in there. I thought our returners did a good job of handling the ball and running. Craphonso Thorpe obviously had a big night. Some of our young guys got in and did a good job. It was good to see. I thought our first group set the tempo really well and we didn't have much drop. I thought Jim (Sorgi) threw the ball well and got a lot of one-on-ones to throw against and he did a good job."

On special teams...

"We got a few chances to kick off and we covered much better. We were able to use our speed. I thought our guys were a little bit more disciplined. We didn't have very many punts to cover and most of those they were trying to block, so we ended up forcing fair catches. But it was good to see our kickoff coverage be a little sharper."

On running game...

"I thought all the guys did well. They didn't get a lot of chances to run because there were so many eight-man fronts and blitz-type looks, we ended up throwing the ball a lot. But they protected well for the most part and went in there and were able to adjust and handle the audible system. They did a good job. We'll see, (but) maybe next week they will get more chances to run."

QB PEYTON MANNING

On being ready for the season...

"We still got another week left of preseason and then a short week to get ready. We need to use the whole time. Every practice, every film session counts. Certainly getting closer and we are excited about it."

On what he learned from this game...

"There will be some good things to see on film. As always there will be some things to learn from. We threw the ball well tonight. Receivers did a good job getting open. Protection did a good job. We saw a lot of different looks. Detroit was pretty active in their blitzes. When they are doing it, it gives you chances to throw the ball. Execution in the passing game was pretty good."

On converting all seven third downs...

"Yes, we had some long ones too. There were some third and longs. You do not want to be in a lot of those, but you practice those in training camp and it was good to have some of those and be able to overcome them. We would like to eliminate getting into some of those third and longs via penalties or via sacks, but when you do, it's nice to be able to overcome them. I thought Reggie's, on the first third-down of the game, was a huge catch and it is always good to have that mindset (that) you just do not want to come off the field."

BOB SANDERS

General comments...

"It felt great. Not many plays but it felt good getting out their and getting to game speed."

On the defense...

"I think we did well tonight and we get better each week. We were able to shut them out the first half and continued in the second half. The young guys played good tonight."
