When you have the best kicker in the NFL on your roster -- like the Colts do with Adam Vinatieri -- it doesn't matter how good your other camp kicker performs. So on Tuesday, Indianapolis released first-year kicker Shane Andrus, who was completing his second camp with the team.
This year Andrus showed that he is NFL-ready with his consistently deep kickoffs, including three that made it into the end zone in the team's preseason game last week against the Lions. And he made every field goal and extra point that he was called upon to kick.
If a few NFL teams don't pick up the phone and give him a tryout over the next few days, they will be kicking themselves later this season as they watch less-talented kickers miss opportunities for their teams. Andrus had a solid spring in NFL Europa and is not only a pro-level kicker, he's also a pretty good athlete with a cool demeanor.
He deserves a shot.
Defensive lineman Travis Leitko was a late signing by the Colts. The former Notre Dame player was cut earlier this year by the Ravens after signing with them as an undrafted free agent.
The Colts also placed defensive tackle Tom Johnson and safety Norman LeJeune on injured reserve. On Monday they were waived/injured by the team.
The two players can stay on injured reserve and miss the season while collecting their salary, or they can reach an injury settlement and gain their release so that they are free to negotiate a new contract with another team this season.
