Manning: Colts Trying to Establish Identity

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning talked to the media following Sunday's win over Tennessee. Find out what he had to say about the game, the Titans, the Colts defense and more in these media conference highlights.

On getting a win on the road in the division...

"This game has been tight the last couple of years, especially when we've been here in Nashville. The teams are very familiar with each other. Similar coaches each years as far as system, so there are not a lot of secrets. There are not going to be any great trick plays that are going to confuse the other team. It is going to go down to the wire. We had some chances, we thought, to maybe score a few more points but we kind of did a few things to hurt ourselves and the Titans kept hanging around. The crowd was into it. They always play well at home. I feel fortunate to get out of here with a win."

On not feeling like they played well...

"It was a great win to come on the road and to win a division game, but I didn't think we played our best football."

On why it is tough to beat the Titans...

"They have good players. For a lot of players, guys like (Keith) Bulluck, (Albert) Haynseworth, (Kyle) Vanden Bosch, are going to know our personnel so there is familiarity. So it comes down to good old-fashion football. There is not a lot of trickery out there. We had a great start. You love to get that touchdown and then we have that extra point there, which to me, is like a win for them. We had some momentum there and we always did a couple things to take it away from us."

On the defense being on the field to stop the Titans at the end of the game...

"Defense came up big. We had a chance there to hopefully put it away. We were having some field goal trouble there, so we were trying to get a touchdown there and try to put the game out of reach. We didn't do as good of a job as we wanted to of running the clock with good field position with the punt into the end zone, although it was a good punt by Hunter (Smith). In division games on the road, you have to find a way to put these games away, but our defense had a great stop at the end."

On what the Titans were doing to confuse the Colts...

"They have some good players. They made some plays. I have got to bite my tongue until I see that interception again. Something wasn't right about… Reggie (Wayne) is running a route on a post, you feel pretty good when you throw a pass and you think it is going to hit him in stride, but all of a sudden, I think one of their players might have had a little contact with one of our players. I didn't see it. Obviously, it wasn't a call there. That was unfortunate because it gave them good field position."

On finding an identity...

"We have got a fairly new team. Some of our players from last year's team were playing on the Titans and we've got some of them playing for other teams. We feel like it is kind of like a new team and trying to establish our identity. I think we'll do that throughout the season. You certainly like to be able to win your first home game and your first road game. We've done that so far and we're going to try to keep it going against Houston next week."

On enjoying the win...

"You take the win and you run with it and you enjoy it, but certainly on Monday when we look at the film, we'll see some things we'll need to build on and we need to be a little sharper on. On the red zone, we got down there a number of times and we had to settle for too many field goals, which that is something you want to try to fix. I thought we did a good job when we had to answer with some drives of doing that. Every time they had a little momentum, the crowd got into it, we answered. But we'd like to try to answer with touchdowns as opposed to field goals."
