Post-Combine Insiders Notebook: Part Two

Eric Hartz continues digging through his notebook and tape recorder for tidbits from the Combine. In this edition, ColtPower delves into Bill Polian's press conference. See what the Colts president had to say about the economy, the first Combine in Lucas Oil Stadium, the wide receivers in the draft, interviewing prospects, the influence of the spread offense, and much, much more!

Bill Polian spoke during the last moments of media availability at the Combine and was quite gracious with his time. Unlike, say Bill Belichick — who spoke for over 10 minutes to begin his press session and then only took about a half-dozen questions — Polian stepped to the podium, told the assembled media to "fire away" and answered questions on a wide variety of topics.

And when the NFL official tried to wrap up the presser after 20 minutes, Polian said, "If you have a couple of more [questions], I'd just as soon do them, get it over with and I'll see you at the league meetings [next month]," and proceeded to take questions for another 15 minutes.

Many of his comments have been well-reported, but here are a few interesting highlights that didn't make the rounds:

On the economy:

We're trying to economize wherever and whenever we can. But we have not planned to eliminate visits. I'm not sure we used the full 30 last year, I think we used less than that, we tried to be judicious with that. A number of years ago, we revisited our travel budgets and changed the way we do some things so I think we're as efficient as we can be there. We have had, as you know, some large layoffs in our building which has been very difficult for Jim Irsay and many others in management. I can't say we won't have any going forward but hopefully the worst is behind us.

We have not yet seen the full effects of the recession in this industry, as the commissioner said last week because the wash-through of sponsorships have not hit us yet and ticket sales have not been tabulated yet, so right now it's sort of a murky picture except that we know the rest of the country is suffering badly.

On worrying about ticket sales taking a hit:

I'm worried as an American that everything is hurting and as the commissioner said, we're not immune to it.

On Lucas Oil Stadium as the venue for the Combine:

Everyone to a man or a lady has said how much they enjoy this and how interesting and exciting the building is. I have not talked at any length with the people who operate the Combine, that will come at a later time, with the competition committee. But in preliminary discussions it seems everything has gone fine. You [the media] certainly have far better digs here than you did in the convention center. Everyone has had to endure the two- or three-block walk which won't happen next year, I think that will be corrected. I think we'll have the pass-through [from the convention center] ready to go. And as you can tell, this building was built equisitely and perfectly by the people who put it together. That's a tribute not only to the architects and the CIB, and the government and the mayor, but all the tradesmen that worked on the building took great pride in it ... we took several trips down here during the construction and they were really excited about doing it and they did a tremendous job. They deserve great credit.

On whether Aaron Maybin could play defensive end at 250 pounds in an "Indy-style" defense:

Yes. Yes he could.

On the thinking on using a first-round pick on a quarterback:

The two most important commodities in the game are pass rushers and QBs. I'm sure you've heard coaches say that over and over. So, if you have one, you've identified one that you think can win for you you have to pull the trigger. The big difficulty is identifying one that can win for you, that's a hard job. In our case, it was not as hard as in other cases because Peyton was such a stick out. But if any of those two commodities are available to you, you should take them, because they're hard to come by and they do change the game and you can't really win big without either one of them.

On the possibilities of the competition committee changing overtime, and if they way the Colts season ended:

I want to make that clear and appreciate the opportunity to discuss it. We should have won that game in regulation. The Chargers ... great credit to them, they won the ball game in overtime and they deserved it. We did not but we had a chance to win in regulation and that's on us. And anything that happened after that is totally immaterial. It has no effect whatsoever on my thinking, my position is firmly that we should have won that game, all we needed to do was make four yard in two downs and we didn't do it. So whatever happened after that is immaterial.

On if he'd like to see a change:

It's two-fold: the people who created this rule wanted to eliminate ties, and they did. We've had one in five years and that's worked. Their judgment was that ties were not good ... secondly, the players have mentioned that they're concerned about extra plays in overtime, we don't have 106 men like the colleges do, we don't play 12 games like the colleges do, we don't have two-week bye weeks like the colleges do, so it is difficult for us to play more plays. The players have made that clear and you have to respect that."

On keeping veteran players:

We've been on top for a long time — ten years in the playoffs or whatever it is — the system is supposed to take it's toll on you over that time. We've been fortunate that is has not. But we recognize that we're going to lose some veteran players we don't want to lose."

On if he's concerned about team discussions with agents that border on tampering:

"Yes I am, but I don't know if there's a remedy for it that's enforceable. It may just be human nature. I wish it were otherwise but I don't know how to make it change."

On the influx of the spread and the Wildcat offenses:

The spread is clearly the dominant offense in college football. But what's interesting is you can approach it in different ways — where you throw it the vast majority of the time, or where you run it 50-50 or maybe even more the way Penn State does. Joe [Paterno] is in the spread but still running the same running plays, which is great. How that translates to the National football League, one the one hand, the passing game from the shotgun is you might say a first cousin, on the other, it's difficult to run a true, unadulterated spread with 5 receivers out there all the time against the Steelers ... you better have a lot of quarterbacks if you want to do that. As for the running part of it, if you saw Pat White out there, he's an intriguing guy. Here's a guy that clearly can throw the ball very well and obviously is a great runner. So is there a role for him? We've already seen it with Slash [Kordell Stewart], we've seen it with Antwaan Randle El, to a lesser degree than Slash. the game has always evolved so I would think that it will continue to evolve and that's something that people at our level will experiment with."

On if Ryan Lilja is progressing:

Right now it's too early to tell. We won't know until the spring with him.

On the receiver class and specifically Percy Harvin:

"I'm not gong to comment on specific players, but this group ran amazingly well, I think 11 in the first group who were sub 4.5 and probably the same in the second group. And there were some amazing times. So we know two things: that's a fast track, as opposed to what people used to say, and we've got a bunch of fast receivers. So that's all to the good. It will be interesting to go through the tape in greater detail and really break these guys down because that type of speed is a rare commodity. It's clearly a good group, no question about it. Very deep and very exciting."

On initial interviews with prospects:

I have never believed that we as football people are well qualified to make a judgment based on that 15-minute interview. There are people who are trained to do that, we are not trained to do that. We can judge them as football players. I'm not a psychologist, and I would rather have a psychologist do that, or certainly a trained human resources professional. And of course there are tests that tell you just as much or more. So that's just one snippet of time that's a part of the whole picture but its not the biggest part and I certainly would not rely on my own ability to discern what is or isn't from a 15-minute interview."

On if the transition from Tony Dungy to Jim Caldwell has been seamless:

It really has. It's everything we expected it to be. Tony was here Friday, as you know. When he's been away, you miss him. He's a great guy, it was coming to work with him every day, great being through this process with him, it was a lot of fun. But, it will be the same with Jim. He has already put his mark on the daily operations and the way he wants things down. Which is to be expected and understandable. But we've gone ahead without any interruption at all ... and I'm thrilled that the coaches that left us got jobs right away. They're good coaches and I'm glad they hooked up.

On what makes his son, Brian, an effective recruiter [at Notre Dame]:

He has his mother's personality.

On how he evaluates defensive backs when it come to height, with shorter guys at the top of the draft:

For one thing, vertical jump is an issue. If a guy has a great vertical jump ... Tyrone Poole comes to mind there, he was 5-8 I guess, but his vertical jump was close to 40. That cuts down some of the difference between him and the wide receiver. And coverability is very important and it's very difficult to find a defensive back who can cover — move his hips, move his feet — as well as a guy who's more compact. So the question becomes what do you give up with respect to coverability as opposed to height in terms of jump balls with people. It clearly is a factor, no question ... Randy Moss is the prime example.

On if the Combine will ever be open to the public and the media:

Never say never (laughs). Any number of people have asked me that question. Let me tell you there's no groundswell on the part of the competition committee to do it, but whether it could happen or not I don't know ... I think the potential distraction is an issue, without question, but never say never. It's not reasonable to assume that Tony Dungy, for example, could sit there and grade players in relative peace. If you try to walk across the street with him it's difficult. Can you imagine him in a building in a static location ... it would be difficult."

On injuries:

Marlin is coming along fine, we anticipate that he will be PUP, I think Bob will be PUP to start the camp period. Beyond that I don't have anybody that I can tell you for sure that is in that boat, and we didn't get any information that would indicate that there's anything on the horizon that's troublesome ... Mike is going to be close. He's coming along fine, but he's going to be close, whether he's PUP [for camp] is up in the air at this point.

I'll add a couple of quick-hit observations I made from Polian's comments before wrapping this edition up. Since this is so lengthy, I'll share more player interest in an upcoming notebook, in addition to the individual scouting reports we've been rolling out.

  1. When asked about the spread, Polian specifically mentioned Joe Paterno and Penn State. That indicates he's been keeping an eye on the Nittany Lions. We've reported that the team is interested in WR Derrick Williams, and this is just one more indication of that.

  2. Polian went on at length about the shorter defensive backs in the draft, and we've reported on some of the DBs the team has shown interest in. The Colts already have several vertically-challenged players, and some of the players in this year's draft class they have shown interest in — Vontae Davis, Alphonso Smith, Joe Burnett and Asher Allen, to name four — are all six-feet or shorter.

Still, as Polian said, it's hard to find big corners that can cover, and 6-feet-3 Sean Smith is the biggest of the top corners in this year's draft.

Davis is 6 feet, is the younger brother of Vernon Davis, and played at nearby Illinois. Scout.com's Ed Thompson has confirmed to us that he talked to the Colts, and he's the second-ranked corner available. Would the Colts trade up to get him, in following with Polian's "best player available" philosophy?

Truthfully, I doubt it. With the depth of linebackers and wide receivers in this draft, I see the Colts staying pat and selecting whichever player at one of those positions they like. In fact.

Look for more on Davis, and some of the other cornerbacks, in upcoming features, however.

  3. If the Colts don't re-sign Dominic Rhodes — and there's still a chance they could — I think the team has some real concerns at the running back position. Polian mentioned that Mike Hart may not be ready for training camp, and there's not much else behind Joseph Addai, who has never carried the load for a full season. Much depends on Rhodes, but if he goes elsewhere, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Colts take on running back on the draft's first day.

That's all for now. Check back soon for a look at Polian's draft strategy, and another notebook from my Combine notes.
