Lucas Still in the Mix?

Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells has two quarterbacks in Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson competing for a spot on the first team, but make no mistake, he will continue to keep his eyes open for other options. Is Ray Lucas still in the mix?

"I don't know that I have any other options. I'm looking, but I haven't seen anything I've liked so far," Parcells said this weekend.

"I've had a couple of quarterbacks call me saying they would be anxious to come here if they could, but we haven't talked to them with any degree of interest. I'm going to see what we have here and see how that goes and then go from there. My mind-set is we're probably going to go with what we have now."

That means, you Ray Lucas.

Not that Parcells mentioned Ray Lucas by name, but he played for Parcells with the Jets and has been looking for work since the Dolphins cut him. Lucas would provide an experienced option to Chad Hutchinson, Quincy Carter, Clint Stoerner and Tony Romo, who have 26 NFL starts combined.

Parcells didn't sound interested. Not that he isn't still looking.

At quarterback. Running back. Everything.

"I'm always on the lookout," Parcells said. "You have to try to use every resource and every vehicle throughout the whole calendar year and always maintain a constant vigil to get players."

Sources seem to confer that the Cowboys' organization as a whole (including Parcells) has been pleasantly surprised by Chad Hutchinson this offseason in terms of his off the field leadership and his on the field performance during the team's first minicamp.

And even though Ray Lucas would be an ideal candidate to serve as a quality veteran backup in 2003, Parcells isn't inclined to pull the trigger to get him anytime in the near future.

"I think quietly, Parcells likes what he's seen of Chad Hutchinson," said a source late last week. "He's got the tools, all he needs is a little more experience."
