Cowboys Meet 'The Reaper,' Cut To 53
The Dallas Cowboys faced two distinct dilemmas as they cut to 53 in time for Saturday's NFL-mandated deadline. One regarded offensive skill-position guys, where Dallas might have a surplus. The other regarded defensive personnel ... where Dallas does not have a surplus.
The deadline transactions:
In order to reach the 53-man roster requirement, the Dallas Cowboys made the following transactions on Saturday:
WR Desmon Briscoe (Kansas)
G Uche Nwaneri (Purdue)
RB D.J. Adams (Portland State)
T Josh Aladenoye (Illinois State)
DE Kenneth Boatright (Southern Illinois)
DT Dartwan Bush (Texas Tech)
WR LaRon Byrd (Miami)
G Stephen Goodin (Nebraska-Kearney)
CB Terrance Mitchell (Oregon)
WR Jamar Newsome (Central Florida)
C Ronald Patrick (South Carolina)
DE Caesar Rayford (Washington)
LB Dontavis Sapp (Tennessee)
LB Keith Smith (San Jose State)
S Ryan Smith (Auburn)
LB Will Smith (Texas Tech)
RB Phillip Tanner (Middle Tennessee)
TE Asa Watson (North Carolina State)
RB Ryan Williams (Virginia Tech)
LB Orie Lemon (Oklahoma State)
DT Zach Minter (Montana State)
S Jakar Hamilton (South Carolina State) CB
Orlando Scandrick (Boise State)
Acquired in a trade with Tennessee: DE Lavar Edwards (Louisiana State) for an undisclosed 2015 Draft pick
Passed Physical: DE Anthony Spencer (Purdue)
In other transactions of note:
*Cowboys "retired'' QB Kyle Orton snaked his way out of Dallas and into Buffalo. KD Drummond has the smart analysis here.
*B.W. Webb, released by Dallas on Friday, has been snatched up by the Steelers.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys aren't done here. As our man Bryan Broaddus smartly notes, we're beginning "The Second Draft" as Dallas gets to comb through the cuts across the league looking for help. They did so at this time last year and brought in four new players. This team needs at least as much aid in its roster churn.
“We’ve always said that the competition is among the guys who are on the team trying to make the roster but also with guys all around the league who may or may not be available to us,” coach Jason Garrett said. “This is a day when we’re cutting from 75 to 53 and 31 other teams are doing the same thing, so there will be a lot of good football players out there."
That's the right approach. Because on the defensive side of the ball, some of what's "out there" can't be vastly inferior to some of what's inside Valley Ranch. We will have more transactions for you as they roll in and later and analysis of these moves.
