Cowboys Romo Promise: 'Best Version Of Me'
This Dallas Cowboys training camp isn't just about Tony Romo, of course. There are 90 stories on the roster, a dozen important camp battles, and even the final contractual year of head coach Jason Garrett to be considered as Dallas tries to bust out of its annual .500 slump.
But Day One, Job One (and Line One, as the coach likes to say) for Thursday was Tony Romo.
The practice wasn't quite "full-go'' for the QB, as the Cowboys had promised a day earlier. “I could have gone through all of them, but today, I felt like, ‘Let’s be smart,’ ” Romo said. “Talking with the trainers and coaches and coming up with a plan ... “I was like, ‘I could keep going, but we have this process going in, and we’re going to stick with it.'''
But the 34-year-old QB was certainly "full-go'' when it came to his confidence level and his belief in his future.
“I’m sure one day when I’m 45, the body will tell me I’m done playing,” Romo said. “But I feel personally like I’ve just started to come into the player that I wanted to be six, seven years ago. I think over the course of the next four or five years, you’ll see the best version of me that I’ve had throughout my career.''
That may not be completely logical; Romo, ramping up slowly to where he wants to be in this camp, is coming off disc surgery from last December and cyst surgery the spring before that. Really, a continuation of where he was last year statistically -- 31 TDs with just 10 interceptions - might be accomplishment enough.
But Romo promises more.
“That’s for a lot of different reasons, but I really believe that, and I believe that will show as we go forward,'' he said. "So I’m excited about that. As my body continues to get healthier and healthier, it’s going to be better.”
