With the loss of Orlando Scandrick to a season-ending knee injury, much talk has arisen over how the Cowboys will construct their 53-man roster. The cut-down to 75 players is due by September 1st, 4pm Eastern, while the final whittling down to 53 by the same time on September 5th. Here’s our two-part look at who we think will end up on the 53, and make up the majority of the 10-man practice squad.
Part I: Offense (25)
QB: No suprises here, Romo and Weeden, with Showers winning the practice squad spot over Vaughan, who started camp slow and looked utterly horrid against San Francisco. RB: Surprise, surprise. The Cowboys keep four, plus a fullback, as Gus Johnson earns the short-yardage designation. This is one area were things could likely change after cutdowns from other teams put other players on the market. TE: A mild surprise here, as the Cowboys keep four tight ends and a fullback. Another position that is likely to be crunched once other teams make cuts. WR: AJ Jenkins has made a strong push recently, and his first-round pedigree combined with the “lights coming on” has Dallas keeping six. Dallas has to have hope for their young gun wide receivers and puts two of them on the practice squad as Lucky Whitehead wins the primary returner role. Offensive Line: Only eight, as I fully expect the Cowboys to be on the market for another tackle once cuts by other teams are made. This assumes Chaz Green gets a redshirt year after his offseason surgery.
Coming soon, the 25 players who make the Cowboys' roster on defense.
