Evaluating Cowboys Moves At QB + RB

MOORE TO P-SQUAD: CHQ predicted the Dallas Cowboys would attempt to pull off the unusual move of having two QBs on the practice squad. Good for us - though we didn’t foresee Lions ex Kellen Moore as one of the two.

Kellen Moore, the 6-0, 200-pound quarterback who was wildly successful at Boise State with a 50-3 mark but never threw a pass with the Detroit Lions, is coming to Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys, we were told on Friday, planned to keep two QBs on the practice squad. The thinking then: Jameill Showers and Dustin Vaughan.

We were right about the plan … but we (and maybe the Cowboys, too) didn’t know Moore would be on the streets. So he is getting a reunion with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, his boss in Detroit. And Dallas is getting … what, exactly?

One report says this is about “depth,’’ but in fact, the acquisition of Moore will have little to do with Tony Romo and Brandon Weeden. They’ll be active. He and Showers will not be.

In truth, it’s even difficult to say this is about Moore as a “prospect.’’ One of his great credentials — he finished in the top 10 in the Heisman Trophy voting three times — doesn’t translate here and doesn’t matter here. This will be about the professionalism he will display while running the scout team … and Showers will be invited to do some of the same, though the latter's versatility as a special-teamer will come in handy on the 10-man practice squad in a variety of ways.

MICHAEL ADDS RB DEPTH ... AND: The Cowboys have traded a conditional pick to the Seahawks for running back Christine Michael. This marks a change in the club’s thinking on the former Texas A&M star … and yes, CHQ believes we’ve gotten to the bottom of the thinking.

Dallas’s lead back in its RBBC plan remains Joe Randle. Maybe that won’t change at all; as Fish has noted, he’s scheduled to take the first snaps with the first team at Dallas’ first regular-season practice of the year on Tuesday as preparation for the opener against the Giants begins.

But that Frisco shoplifting thing … and that Wichita windshield thing … and then the excused absence due to a legal matter from this week’s kickoff luncheon …

We smell smoke. We sense fire. Go here for a Video Report and links on the trade.

Christine (pronounced “Chris-Chin,’’ and we’re sorry for getting it wrong so many times!) has experienced his own problems with immaturity. Are his exhibitions of knuckle-headed behavior behind him? He’ll begin not only behind Randle, but also behind Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar.

But ...

He’s a former second-round pick, and a power back. The Cowboys gave up next to nothing for him (a conditional seventh-rounder). If he’s a flake, that’ll be that. If he’s a flake and Randle proves to be one, too (and come to think of it, has the NFL ever handed down any punishments for his incidents?!) Dallas will deal with it with yet another trade down the line, we bet.

But maybe Randle will dance out of trouble. And maybe Michael’s credentials will help the Texas A&M product mature back in his home state.

QUICK KICKS: Jason Garrett's presser is today at 10 a.m.. There is no player access; CHQ will be on the field and in the locker room on Tuesday ... Here's our roster prediction leading to how the final 53 turned out. Subtract Lavar Edwards and add Michael and nailed it!  ... Need help understanding the general fit and finance of RBBC?
