Draft Day 2 Wrap-Up: Jaylon Smith, Maliek Collins, And A Cowboys Philosophy?

Draft Day 2 Wrap-Up: Jaylon Smith, Maliek Collins, And A Cowboys Philosophy?

Round 2

After last season, one could see it as apparent that the Dallas Cowboys needed help at the linebacker position. Beat up, thin, and lacking elite talent that shows up every day (Pro Bowler Sean Lee does his thing and Ro McClain does his), Dallas might like to find a guy that would shore up the back end of the front seven for the foreseeable future.

They believe that they have found that in Jaylon Smith. But the "future'' may be way in the future.

During the Fiesta Bowl in his final season at Notre Dame, Smith suffered a devastating knee injury in which he tore both his ACL and LCL in his knee. His injury will cause NFL watchers -- and Cowboys critics -- to question whether or not he will be ready to play in the coming season.

Maybe ... hopefully ... like Todd Gurley in last year’s draft.

But Gurley didn't have a "dead nerve'' in his leg. Smith's medical issues seem severe ... and yet while there is an outside shot at him returning at a later point in the 2016-17 season, most believe Smith will be ready to go at the start of the 2017-18 season.

Smith certainly "believes,'' saying, "Absolutely,'' when asked about playing in 2016. "Never doubt God.''

And Cowboys owner Jerry Jones does, too, adding, "....

Smith stands 6-2” and 240 pounds and is equipped with outstanding speed and explosion in the open field. He takes excellent angles and is supremely gifted in pursuit as well. Smith is very gifted in his ability to read and diagnose plays and explode at the ball carrier, while maintaining balance, power and technique in his tackles.

Smith has the ability to fight off blockers and maintain his pursuit, whether it be using power or quickness. He also might be the most forceful tackler in this draft class.

Lastly, Smith is versatile enough to drop into coverage or rush the passer. He will have the ability to adjust to any defensive scheme he is brought into, and can play either on the outside of the 4-3 as well as the inside of a 3-4 or a 4-3 scheme.

We think Smith compares favorably to Navarro Bowman of the San Francisco 49ers. Both players possess similar size and style of play, while also utilizing the same freakish athletic ability and versatility. Obviously comparisons to a Pro-Bowl-level linebacker are lofty, but Smith is that talented, and if he makes a full recovery, the sky is the limit.

So here's the question (well, questions): Is Smith being brought in at a position of need to eventually play either inside of or opposite of Sean Lee at the linebacker position? Or does "need'' matter at all when you're this gifted? On paper, the pairing of Lee and Smith in the front seven could give the Cowboys one of the best linebacker cores in the NFL, and if you include McClain in there, this is a talented room.

But is there a "philosophy'' to this pick? We've got "BPA'' and "Availability trumps Ability'' and "Win-Now.'' ... are they just platitudes?

Yes. Dallas simply picked the best guy it could, using its best judgment, quite likely armed with the best info because the Cowboys team doc, Dr. Dan Cooper, is the man who performed Smith's knee surgery.

Round 2

In Round 2, the Cowboys selected defensive tackle prospect Maliek Collins out of Nebraska. Collins is a three-tech guy with outstanding get-off and very good lateral movement along the line. Collins loves the inside move, and is also a very high motor type of guy. As a former dominant high school wrestler, he knows how to create leverage and use his hands at the point of attack. Collins fits one of the Cowboys’ big needs along the defensive line, in a spot that will allow him to push upfield and disrupt things for the opposing offense.

We can hope Collins compares pretty favorably to former Cowboys defensive lineman Henry Melton in terms of skillset, size and athletic ability. He should fit in very well to Rod Marinelli’s scheme, and see time early along the defensive front.

As for the rest of the NFC East?

The Giants selected Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard with their first pick of Day 2. The Giants needed some help on the outside to pair with Odell Beckham Jr., and they gave Eli that weapon with this pick. Was he the best wide receiver available? Maybe not, but Smith is a very hard worker and runs terrific routes. He has the ability to thrive in the slot against linebackers or safeties, as well as on the outside against traditional corners. His strength needs to improve, and he has room to get faster, but Shepard should come in and help out the Giants offense fairly quickly.

In Round 3, The Giants selected safety Darian Thompson out of Boise State. The Giants secondary was woeful to say the least this past season, and Thompson should help shore up that area alongside Eli Apple. Thompson is a ball hawk who broke Eric Weddle’s interception record for the Mountain West Conference with 19 picks, and received All-American honors in his final two seasons at Boise State. Though he struggles with tackling, the Giants needed a guy who can make plays on the ball, and that’s what Thompson brings.

The Redskins selected outside linebacker prospect Su’a Cravens out of USC with their second-round pick. Cravens started his career at USC as a safety, but transitioned to linebacker by the end of his college career. Cravens can run sideline to sideline and has great instincts, and will excel in pass coverage thanks to his pedigree as a defensive back. He compares pretty favorably to Deone Bucannon of Arizona, and should thrive at a similar spot for the Redskins.

In the third round, Washington selected cornerback Kendall Fuller out of Virginia Tech. Fuller is the fourth Fuller brother to be selected in the NFL, and the fourth that has played for the Hokies. Washington had some serious issues in the secondary a season ago, which seemed to be a common theme among teams in the NFC East. Fuller should give them a confident, ball-hawk corner that flies to the ball, and who will excel in the Tampa 2 scheme that Washington employs.

The Eagles didn’t have a pick in round 2, due to them trading up for the second pick in the first round.

In Round 3, the Eagles selected offensive Guard Isaac Seumalo out of Oregon State. Offensive guard isn’t s sexy pick, but the Eagles need to protect their investment in quarterback Carson Wentz. He can play multiple positions on the line, and should provide Philly with some depth and versatility up front.

Now add up Dallas' two-day take
So what was the "philosophy'' when we dig into info on all three guys? BPA? Sure, with first-rounder Ezekiel Elliott. "Win-now''? Certainly not, with Jaylon Smith. "Don't reach for need''? Maybe not, with Collins.
The "philosophy'' is no single philosophy at all, other than attempt to find good players who fit while weighting risk/reward. Which Dallas attempts to do again today in the final Day 3 of the NFL Draft.
