* The Cowboys reached injury settlements with DT Darrell Wright and OG Joe Johnson. They traded long snapper Jeff Grau to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2005.
* They also signed Titans free-agent center Gennaro DiNapoli to a one-year deal. He got $150,000 up front, $530,000 in base salary and can make another $500,000 in incentives to shore up a position following the loss of rookie Al Johnson to a knee injury.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Dan Campbell vs. Tony McGee at TE. McGee is the incumbent but Campbell is a free-agent addition who has garnered favor with the coaching staff because of his superior run blocking. Campbell got the start in the preseason opener against the Cardinals, only to drop a pass on the first play of the game. McGee is considered the superior pass catcher and will likely start this Friday's game against the Texans.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Gennaro DiNapoli vs. Matt Lehr at C: With Al Johnson gone, Lehr has taken over but he is not considered a long-term answer at the position. After his play against the Cardinals, he is not even a short-term answer. DiNapoli was signed as insurance for Johnson and will get his chance quickly. Derek Ross vs. Mario Edwards at RCB: Edwards, not Ross, started alongside Terence Newman at cornerback against the Cardinals. Edwards has had a solid camp but has worked mostly with the second team. Ross started last weekend's scrimmage against the Texans but has been criticized by Parcells for his lack of technique.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Randal Williams. Williams looked to be on his way out after dropping two passes in the scrimmage against the Texans. He certainly revised memories of his stone hands reputation of a year ago. However, Williams, who had a solid training camp, responded with a strong week of practice and capped it by leading the Cowboys in receiving against the Cardinals.
ROOKIE REPORT: CB Terence Newman continues to solidify himself at left cornerback ... Johnson is out for the year with a knee injury ... RB Rashard Lee had the longest play against the Cardinals with a 35-yard kickoff return and continues to be a player of intrigue at running back...TE Jason Witten caught the longest pass of the night against the Cardinals, a 20-yarder from fellow rookie QB Tony Romo.
INJURY REPORT: CB Pete Hunter: out at least a month with a fractured forearm.
C Al Johnson: lost for the season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee.
RB Michael Wiley: missed the Cardinals game with a sore shoulder.
WR Reggie Swinton: missed the Cardinals game with a strained hamstring.
WR Joey Galloway: missed Cardinals game because of death in his family.
