Cowboys Top 5 needs

Pass rusher: The Joneses underscored why this is a need when DeMarcus Ware retired on Monday, saying the Cowboys don’t have a player like that. (Click here for our story on Ware's big day.) There may not be a player like that at No. 28, but the Cowboys need help in the pass rush now. Also remember that Randy Gregory is suspended for 2017 and that Demarcus Lawrence is coming off surgery.

Cornerback: The losses of Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne mean the Cowboys need to bolster the depth behind their top three corners, Orlando Scandrick, Nolan Carroll and Anthony Brown.

Safety: The Cowboys lost Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox. They say they’re happy with Jeff Heath starting alongside Byron Jones. We’ll see. But there are opportunities in this draft to improve depth and competition.

Offensive tackle: The retirement of Doug Free (see our scoop here, including the leadership void) means there will be competition at right tackle. The Cowboys could find a tackle that adds fuel to that competition. ... though they say all the right things about Chaz Green winning the job.

Tight end: Jason Witten is extended through the end of the decade. James Hanna, Geoff Swaim and Rico Gathers are on the roster. But don’t rule out another addition to a position the Cowboys value.
