Cowboys Top 5 needs

Pass rusher: The Cowboys helped address this need by taking Taco Charlton at No. 28. Don’t rule out the Cowboys taking more pass rush help on Saturday.

Cornerback: The Cowboys grabbed Colorado’s Chidobe Awuzie and Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis in rounds 2 and 3. We're told both had second-round grades from Dallas. Awuzie - introduced in a classic manner by Drew Pearson, above - can play slot or outside and was a consistent part of Colorado’s great defense in 2016. Lewis is believed by some to be the best pure corner in this draft, but he faces a misdemeanor domestic violence trial in July. He pled not guilty in March. One must assume the Cowboys feel confident it won’t be an issue. But it’s a risk for the moment.

Safety: The Cowboys lost Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox. They say they’re happy with Jeff Heath starting alongside Byron Jones. We’ll see. I could see the Cowboys taking a safety in Day 3.

Offensive tackle: The retirement of Doug Free means there will be competition at right tackle. The Cowboys could find a tackle that adds fuel to that competition. If the Cowboys address this need it will likely be on Day 3.

Tight end: Jason Witten is extended through the end of the decade. James Hanna, Geoff Swaim and Rico Gathers are on the roster. But don’t rule out another addition to a position the Cowboys value. Seems like a Day 3 need if Cowboys want to address it.
