Payton to be Announced Oakland Head Coach

According to reliable sources, Cowboys assistant coach Sean Payton will soon be announced as the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders. If true, Payton will be the youngest head coach in the National Football League.

After interviewing for the job initially back on January 12th, Payton was then brought in for another interview Sunday evening after returning home from a family vacation in Florida.

According to several sources, including the Dallas Morning News Payton has agreed to become Oakland's head coach and is expected to sign a 4-year contract worth approximately $1.3 million per year.

Payton has been credited for helping turn around the career of the often maligned Quincy Carter in Dallas.

He spent the last four seasons with the New York Giants as the offensive coordinator under Jim Fassel before coming to Valley Ranch before the start of the 2003 season.

Oakland owner Al Davis fired head coach Bill Callahan after the team finished 4-12 with several aging stars in wide receivers Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, and quarterback Rich Gannon.

The raiders also interviewed Cowboys' offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon for the vacancy.
