One major need for the Cowboys this offseason was filled this weekend when then the team traded a third-round pick in 2005 to Houston for quarterback Drew Henson. Henson will be able to report to the team immediately after not playing football for three years.
His effectiveness, especially early on, will be in question, but few doubt his overall ability. Many analysts considered him to be one of the potential top 5 picks in the draft should he have elected to play his senior year at Michigan, instead of opting for a Major League Baseball career.
Three and a half years later, Henson will try his hand in Valley Ranch, after coming to terms with an 8-year contract over the weekend.
While Quincy Carter is clearly still the starter, expect Henson to try and take that spot sometime in the next two seasons.
Running back-- The Cowboys will address the running back position in both the draft and free agency. They are eying Chris Perry, Kevin Jones, Greg Jones and Steven Jackson in the first round of the draft and possibly Michael Turner and Maurice Clarett in the second round.
Offensive line-- Improving the running game also means improving the offensive line, especially the right side of the line where tackle Ryan Young and guard Andre Gurode were huge disappointments. Given that Young was recently released, tackle is the top priority of the offseason. The Cowboys will get an offensive tackle in free agency
or at the top of the draft.
Defensive end-- The Cowboys had the No. 1 defense in the league last year but no one feared the Cowboys defense because they ranked among the bottom of the league in sacks and turnovers. The defense needs a catalytic rush end to make it a true difference-making unit. The Cowboys believe they filled this need with free agent defensive end Marcellus Wiley. They will now turn their attention to signing a cornerback in free agency, possibly Bobby Taylor.
