Two Round Mock Draft

Less than a week left before the big day and time to make some projections. Tony Pauline and Adam Caplan came together and offer TFY Draft Preview's initial two round mock. Expect an update Friday afternoon.

1 San Diego Eli Manning QB Mississippi
Reason: The franchise needs a player to build the franchise around.  Manning offers the possibility of quick, short term gains and the ability to put fans in the seats.
Other Options: One or more trades into the middle of round one for Philip Rivers, the quarterback they truly desire.
2 Oakland Robert Gallery T Iowa
Reason: The safe pick at an area of need.
Other Options: Roy Williams or a trade down is possible.
3 Arizona Larry Fitzgerald WR Pittsburgh
Reason: Green is familiar with Fitzgerald dating back to his days with the Vikings and loves Fitzgerald's upside.  Green also has a history of drafting offensive skills players.
Other Options:  If Fitzgerald is unavailable this could be the spot where we have our first surprise as the Cards has Winslow Jr highly ranked and could tab the tight end.
4 NY Giants Philip Rivers QB  NC State
Reason:  Do we think the Giants will take Rivers?  Yes...do we think it will be in the fourth slot?? No...look for the Giants to trade down three to four slots, pick up extra selections then tab the Wolfpack passer
Other Options:  If they stand pat and neither Robert Gallery nor Eli Manning are available Sean Taylor and/or Ben Roethlisberger are options.
5 Washington Kellen Winslow TE Miami-Fl
Reason: Gibbs offense employs two-tight ends and the Redskins don't even have one solid player at the position.
Other Options: Sean Taylor is being heavily considered here as is a trade up to secure Robert Gallery.
6 Detroit   Sean Taylor S Miami-Fl
Reason: The franchise believes it is too early for Steven Jackson and the secondary needs a quick infusion of youth at the safety spot.
Other Options: Trading down a few slots then selecting Jackson.
7 Cleveland DeAngelo Hall CB Virginia Tech
Reason:  The defense is in desperate need of playmakers and the Browns love Hall's speed and return abilities.
Other Options: This could be an interesting pick as the Browns could be burning the phones to move up and acquire either Gallery, Winslow or Taylor.  Roy Williams is also being considered here.
8 Atlanta Roy Williams WR Texas
Reason: The Falcons need a true number one receiver and another playmaker on offense to help Michael Vick.
Other Options: A healthy Tommie Harris is a consideration here as is DeAngelo Hall if he's available.
9 Jacksonville Kenechi Udeze DE USC
Reason: The final piece to one of the NFL's top young defensive lines.  A better run defender than Hugh Douglas, Udeze should see a lot of one-on-one blocking assignments with Stroud and Henderson clogging the middle.
Other Options: Roy Williams and/or DeAngelo Hall if available with the sleeper pick being Will Smith at this spot.
10 Houston Tommie Harris DT Oklahoma
Reason: D-line is an area of need and Harris is one of the better two-gap lineman in the draft.
Other Options: A top cornerback (Hall if available), Vince Wilfork and don't be shocked if they select a wide out.
11 Pittsburgh Ben Roethlisberger QB Miami-Ohio
Reason: The Steelers desperately need a passer for the future and Roethlisberger is excellent value here.
Other Options:  Dunta Robinson is serious consideration in this slot.
12 New York Jets Dunta Robinson  CB South Carolina
Reason:  The Jets are in need of a starting corner and Robinson fits the bill.
Other Options: Look for the Jets to trade down three-to-four slots and select Jon Vilma or another linebacker.
13 Buffalo Will Smith DE Ohio State
Reason: Buffalo has been looking for a pass rusher the past three seasons and Smith, who is soaring up boards, fits the bill.
Other Options: A big receiver like Mike Williams will seriously be considered here but expect the Jets to trade at pick twelve with a franchise that eventually selects Williams.
14 Chicago Vince Wilfork DT Miami-Fl
Reason: The defense desperately needs a big thumper on the inside.
Other Options: Outside (strong-side) linebacker is a consideration here.
15 Tampa Bay Mike Williams WR USC
Reason: A big wide out to replace Keyshawn Johnson is needed and Williams fits the bill.
Other Options: It is quite possible Williams is selected in the twelfth slot and if so Reggie Williams will be considered here as will offensive lineman Shawn Andrews or linebacker DJ Williams.
16 San Francisco  Reggie Williams WR Washington
Reason:  Big receiver to replace Terrell Owens.
Other Options: A defensive end like Will Smith  would be the pick should he fall.  Trading up or down is a possibility.
17 Denver (from Cincinnati) Steven Jackson RB Oregon State
Reason: Denver could trade up to assure the services of Jackson.  He offers assurance after the trade which sent Clinton Portis to Washington.
Other Options: A trade up for Mike Williams will be sought while a linebacker is also a strong consideration.
18 New Orleans Jonathan Vilma LB Miami-Fl
Reason: Orlando Ruff has not worked out and the linebacker core stills needs starters.
Other Options:  A cornerback is a serious consideration at this slot and so is a big bodied wide out.
19 Minnesota  D.J. Williams OLB Miami-Fl
Reason: EJ Henderson will start in the middle and Williams should immediately slide into Henri Crockett's spot.
Other Options: The defense desperately needs an end but anyone besides Smith or Udeze is a major reach at this point.  Receiver is also a consideration here.
20 Miami Shawn Andrews T Arkansas
Reason: Replacement for the departed Todd Wade.
Other Options:  Lee Evans is being considered here and the Fish will also look at the linebackers.
21 New England (Balt) Kevin Jones RB Virginia Tech
Reason: The Patriots could stand "pat" and hit paydirt with Jones.
Other Options:  Offensive tackle, corner and linebacker are also considerations.
22 Dallas Chris Gamble CB Ohio State
Reason: The Boys need a starting corner opposite Terence Newman and Gamble offers a more aggressive style of play.
Other Options: Dallas could move up to secure Kevin Jones should he slide or even move down for a guard like Justin Smiley.
23 Seattle Darnell Dockett DT Florida State
Reason:  Not the big-bodied run stuffer the Seahawks need but a talented defensive tackle none-the-less.
Other Options: Receiver is a slight option because of the quality still available on the board or a young outside linebacker to replace Chad Brown could be sought.
24 Cincinnati (Den) Derrick Strait CB Oklahoma
Reason: A consistent cover-corner that is a perfect fit for Marvin Lewis' defense.
Other Options: The defense desperately needs an end.
25 Green Bay  Karlos Dansby OLB  Auburn
Reason: Dansby could play either of the outside linebacker positions, both areas of need.
Other Options: JP Losman if the trade for Couch does not look promising and cornerback, depending on the situation with Mike McKenzie.
26 St. Louis Lee Evans WR Wisconsin
Reason: Isaac Bruce is getting up there in years and the Martz offense is predicated on speed, something which Evans has plenty of.
Other Options: JP Losman as Bulger has yet to sign a contract extension.  Darrion Scott could be the surprise pick here.
27 Tennessee  Randy Starks DT Maryland
Reason:  Whoever the pick is it could be a reach.  Starks draws mixed reviews but to our minds is the best D-lineman on the board and that is the way Tennessee needs to go.
Other Options:  The surprise pick at this slot could be Darrion Scott.
28 Philadelphia Vernon Carey G/T Miami-Fl
Reason:  The Eagles need depth on the offensive line and Carey will give them that plus he can play at G or OT.
Other Options: A corner such as Will Poole or Chris Gamble if he falls. Trading up for a shot at LBs Jon Vilma/DJ Williams are possibilities.
29 Indianapolis  Will Poole CB USC
Reason: Poole salvaged his draft status last week and is perfect for Dungy's system.
Other Options: An outside linebacker such as Karlos Dansby or Michael Boulware are possibilities.
30 Kansas City Rashaun Woods WR Oklahoma State
Reason: The fans want defense as does the front office but receiver is also a need and Woods is a perfect fit.
Other Options: Isaac Sopoaga, Marcus Tubbs or another big defensive tackle.
31 Carolina Michael Clayton WR LSU
Reason: With Veteran WR Mushin Muhammad nearing the end of his career and the team lacking quality depth behind him, they'll look for Clayton here.
Other Options: Any corner that slides down would be seriously considered.
32 New England Teddy Lehman LB Oklahoma
Reason: The Pats have a thing for overachieving linebackers and Lehman is one of the most versatile.  Should be ferocious in the inside.
Other Options: Cornerback or a receiver like Michael Jenkins
