Oregon State WR Signs with Dallas

Oregon State record breaking receiver James Newson has signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys. "He's a reliable receiver with a natural feel for the game," notes NFL Draft Expert Tony Pauline. "He displays focus and football intelligence to get the job done."

The majority of Oregon State fans feel Newson was looked over and should have been drafted. Part of the reason Newson was overlooked was due to a 4.84 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine in February.

Despite being "very disappointed" that he was not drafted, the California native is looking forward to prove he can make it in the NFL.

"I've been proving people wrong my whole life," Newson told the Oregonian. "The missed out on a great player."

Name: James Newson School Oregon State Year 5Sr
Ht: 6-0.5 Wt: 213 40: 4.85 Pos: WR

Bio: Led Oregon State in all receiving categories the past three seasons. Totaled a career best 81/1,306/3 after junior totals of 74/1,284/12 and 57/968/5 as a sophomore.

Positive: Reliable receiver with a natural feel for the game. Displays focus and football intelligence to get the job done. Fluid releasing off the line, runs adequate routes then uses his body to shield defenders. Times and anticipates his receptions, lays out or extends to make the tough grab in traffic. Gets vertical and pulls the ball out of the air. Goes over the middle, takes a pounding and holds onto the ball. Can double cut and get separation.

Negative: Lacks the get up and go speed and ran very poorly at the combine and in individual workouts.

Analysis: A terrific football player, Newson has almost a sixth sense on the field and a great feel for the position. Not fast or big but a solid wide out that can produce at the next level.
