Slur Causes a Stir

In referencing the Cowboys' strategy concerning "gadget plays," or "trick plays," head coach Bill Parcells made an insensitive comment yesterday at a post mini-camp press conference.

"Sean's going to have a disrespect to the Orientals, but what we call 'Jap plays.' OK? Surprise things," Parcells said refering offensive coordinator Sean Payton calling "surprise plays" during practice.

"No disrespect to anyone," Parcells said right before making the comment.

A video clip of Parcells speaking to reporters ended up becoming one of the lead stories on ESPN's SportsCenter late Monday evening, even though the comment was prefaced by the remark by saying that he meant no disrespect to anyone.

"I made a very inappropriate reference, and although I prefaced the remark, 'No disrespect to anyone intended,' it was still uncalled for and inconsiderate," he said. "For that, I apologize to anyone who may have been offended."

Rich Dalrymple, a spokesman for the Cowboys, apologized on behalf of the team.

"He stated that he intended no disrespect," Dalrymple said. "The organization apologizes to anyone who may have been offended."
