Quick Hits with Terence Newman

"If it happens it happens," said Newman about potentially playing on offense this year. "I'm not going to try and push coach to put me in on offense. If they want to put me out there that's great, if not, that's great."

Has the whole issue of you playing offense been blown out of proportion?
Newman: I think it is. If it happens it happens. I'm not going to try and push coach to put me in on offense. If they want to put me out there that's great, if not, that's great. If I were to do it, it would have to be in spot play. You couldn't do it both ways continuously.

Talk a little bit about coming into your second year at corner.
Newman: A lot more comfortable than I was last year. As a rookie, you have to worry about learning your playbook and you have to worry about not doing things wrong and having the coaches' ride you or you letting your team down. So I'd say I'm a lot more confident entering my second year.

Was it a shocker to learn about what happened with Quincy Carter?
Newman: I don't know all the parameters that led up to it, but the fact that he was the starter last year and he's not with us anymore, that is a big shocker.

What was your initial reaction when you heard it?
Newman: I thought everybody was joking around but so many people told me that it happened that you had to believe it. It was pretty much an unbelievable situation.

Your impressions of Vinny Testaverde now as the starting quarterback?
Newman: I remember when we played him last year with the Jets. Not a lot of quarterbacks can make the kinds of throws that he does. He's still got it, I can tell you that. He's got a strong arm.

What about Drew Henson?
Newman: IF you ask me, Drew struggled early, but he's been throwing some good balls lately.

What have you seen out of the other cornerback position so far in training camp?
Newman: There is a lot of competition over there right now. Everybody wants to know who it's going to be. Right now it's Pete. He's got all the tools to be a shutdown runner. He's tall, he's got long arms. He's got all the tools.
