Jets Sign Quincy Carter

The New York Jets have signed quarterback Quincy Carter. Carter was released suddenly by the Dallas Cowboys for undisclosed reasons, though it was reported he had failed a drug test.

The deal is reportedly a one-year contract to serve as a backup to Chad Pennington.

The projected primary backup to Pennington, second-year veteran Brooks Bollinger, who is sidelined by a sprained knee. The number three quarterback on the depth chart is former CFL star Ricky Ray, who is in his first NFL training camp.

Carter is expected to take the place of Brooks Bollinger.

Carter was unexpectedly released by the Cowboys earlier this month with no explanation from the organization. It was believed that he failed a drug test.

Carter was the Cowboys' second-round pick in the 2001 draft. In three years in Dallas, Carter started 31 games and completed 507 of 902 passes, for 5,839 yards, with 29 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.
