Ahman Green's game-breaking 90-yard touchdown run will be what's remembered, but it was his 32-yard run on a third-and-1 situation that was infinitely bigger.
While Green's long touchdown run made NFL history — he and Bo Jackson are the only players in league annals with two 90-yard scoring runs — the dash simply turned a 34-13 blowout into a 41-13 blowout. Instead, it was his run on the first play of the second quarter that got the Packers on their way to their 41-20 victory.
With Dallas up 6-3, the Packers were facing a third down at the Dallas 48. Green followed the lead block of fullback Nick Luchey, who has led the way on so many key runs this season. The key to the play, however, was Luchey not just making the block, but sticking with it.
While Luchey took care of standout Cowboys linebacker Dexter Coakley, Green was preoccupied at the line of scrimmage by another standout linebacker, Dat Nguyen. Somehow, Green slipped Nguyen in the backfield. That left plenty of clear sailing as guard Marco Rivera and center Grey Ruegamer obliterated defensive tackle La'Roi Glover.
Because Luchey maintained his block on Coakley, Green suddenly was in the clear. Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams took a horrible angle and Green easily slipped his tackle attempt, turning a 7-yard gain into a 32-yard rumble.
Green's run gave the Packers a first down at Dallas' 16-yard line. A 12-yard run on the next play by Najeh Davenport gave the Packers a first-and-goal, and on second down Green ducked his way into a crevice and darted into the end zone. The touchdown put the Packers in front for good at 10-6, and the Packers went on to score 31 of the next 38 points, a surge capped by Green's 90-yard sprint.
