Tulane receiver Roydell Williams filled in for Terrence Murphy today after the Texas A&M wide out was sent home with an injured groin. Murphy was checked by doctors prior to yesterday's practice who thought with the weather at hand (it was 25-degrees during practice) it was not worth the risk of further damage to the groin. Sources told us had the temperature been closer to today's 60-degrees Murphy would have stayed and practiced for the remainder of the week.
Vanderbilt's Justin Giesinger will fill in for Rob Petitti who was walking around in a cast after injuring his ankle this morning. Giesinger, who manned the left tackle spot all four years at Vanderbilt and projects to guard in the NFL, will be used at right tackle. This is not a good sign for Petitti who has been dropping down draft boards after showing up out of shape then turning in a bad practice on Monday.
One prospect headed in the other direction is Khalif Barnes. After a pair of outstanding practices in which he dominated the opposition, the buzz amongst scouts tonight is Barnes could be headed into the late part of round one.
The other thought swirling around the Riverview Hotel is Matt Jones, the former Arkansas passer who most project to wide receiver, may ultimately wind up at tight end. Several factors come into play here, foremost Jones' lack of quickness and inability to get separation from defenders. There is also a belief Jones will also be able to add bulk as well as strength to his underdeveloped 242-pound frame once he's put on a weight lifting regiment.
Gator underclassman Channing Crowder was in attendance today and many were surprised how small he actually is in person. Rumor has it that another player who made himself eligible for the draft, quarterback Adrian McPherson, will be on hand for tomorrow's practices.
There is also a hot rumor in Mobile that this could be the final stint for many of the defensive coaches wearing silver and black. There is a chance that the entire Raider staff on the defensive side of the ball could be fired within the weeks after this game.
An interesting note on Carolina Panthers running back Stephen Davis (knee). We're told his recovery from microfracture surgery is going well but we're also told that he won't be ready to go full speed until around July. The question now is, will they keep him until then? With the emergence of Nick Goings and the return of DeShaun Foster from injury, Davis would seem like the odd man out.
