#5) OLB/DE is the Priority
One of the most popular rumors we are hearing regarding the upcoming draft, is that the Cowboys will be looking to add the services of a playmaking defensive end or linebacker with their first overall selection. Shawne Merriman is one name that comes up the most often because he has the "Parcells attitude" and has the versatility to play in a 3-4 defense, or any sort of hybrid formation that may form from the 3-4. He'll also likely be there when the Cowboys go on the clock with the No. 11 overall pick.
#4) Wide Receiver is Another Priority
This has been a difficult subject to obtain reliable information on, but by most accounts, the Cowboys will be looking to add a speedy wide out somewhere after their first overall selection. From the latest information we've gathered, we think it will happen sometime at the end of the first round or the beginning of the second. The Cowboys would love to get South Carolina's Troy Williamson, but he could be long gone by then. Regardless, if the Cowboys cannot get Williamson, they'll look at other options, including UAB's Roddy White. White is an underrated speedster with good hands. He was also interviewed extensively by the Cowboys during the week prior to the Senior Bowl.
#3) Running Back Still Possible
The Cowboys want to add a running back to compliment Julius Jones next year, but it looks as though that need won't be addressed until after the second round of this year's draft. Parcells wants a bigger back to help Jones carry the load through the rigors of a 16-game regular season.
#2) More Depth Up Front
There's a reason the Cowboys spent a majority of their time at the Senior Bowl and at the NFL Combine talking to offensive and defensive linemen- they plan to add a couple of key players up front via the draft. Virginia Tech's Jim Davis, Oregon's Adam Synder, and a whole of host of late round sleepers are all considerations. At the end of the day, don't be surprised to see three or four linemen acquired in this year's draft.
#1) Trading Down Again
One of the most popular theories we are hearing from Valley Ranch Insiders is that the Cowboys will trade down (once again) with their second selection in the first round in this year's draft. By trading down, the Cowboys should be able to acquire additional later round picks. Jerry Jones elected to do it last year, and judging by the large pool of equal talent, it's bound to happen again.
