Cowboys Interested in Another LB

This linebacker out of Conference USA has spoken with the Cowboys on several occasions. <BR>

University of Louisville linebacker Robert McCune only has two years of starting experience, having spent two seasons as a reserve and special teams player, after redshirting in 2000. He made the most of his time on special teams and was named special teams player of the year in 2001.

In 2003 he finally got his chance to start and really broke out with 143 tackles and 4 sacks. He had another good year as a senior with 115 tackles 2 sacks and 1 interception. Although he does lack ideal height for a middle linebacker in the NFL, McCune has a nice combination of size, speed and strength.

How have your off season workouts gone?
McCune: It's been a good off season and I've continued to stay in shape and I've maintained.

I understand you were pleased with your showing at the combine in Indianapolis.
McCune: I did pretty good in the Senior Bowl and the combine. Electronically they clocked me at 4.50, but my agent told me that on some clocks they had me at 4.37 and a 4.44. I did 34 reps on the bench press and there was one other guy that did more than me - he did 36. I was pretty pleased because when I was training over in Duluth, GA I was getting around 34 or 35 so I gave it my all and I don't have any regrets.

As a senior at Louisville, McCune recorded 115 total tackles four tackles for loss, two sacks, and an INT.
You opened some eyes with your speed at the combine - that is a big part of your game isn't it?
McCune: Oh yes, it is a big part of my game. Running to the football and being around the football are strengths. I was talking to the Saints and the scout was wondering if I could run the time that they had marked down for me. After I ran he came up to me and shook my hand and congratulated me.

Who has shown a lot of interest in you?
McCune: A lot of teams have called. They liked the route that I took and like the way I play football and they tell me to keep my head up everything is going to be okay. I heard from New Orleans and Pittsburgh, Dallas, San Francisco and Houston, and some other teams have called.

Your background and makeup are viewed as big factors in teams interest.
McCune: I'm just going to keep doing the right things and keep giving my all and whatever happens in the draft I'm going to be satisfied. I've given all I've got.

Have you gotten any indication where you might fall in the draft?
McCune: I heard a lot of things anywhere from the late second round on. Whatever happens I'll be happy.
