Parcells Calls Clarett's Agent

We've got the scoop on Maurice Clarett, and the Cowboys potential interest in drafting him.

TheRanchReport.com has learned that the Dallas Cowboys are very interested in drafting former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett in the upcoming NFL Draft.

According to several reliable sources, Clarett's agent received a telephone call from Bill Parcells himself, indicating the Cowboys are interested in selecting Clarett in the later rounds, if he is still available.

"They like him," one source said of the Cowboys. "When a guy like Bill Parcells calls you like that, you know he means business."

Dallas is interested in acquiring another running back either in free agency, or in the draft, to compliment the speedy Julius Jones.

Clarett rushed 222 times for 1,237 yards and 16 touchdowns as a true freshman at Ohio State.
Clarett, a former Ohio State star who helped lead his team to the 2002 National Championship, has been the center of quite a controversy since he challenged the NFL to throw out its restriction against players who are less than three years removed from high school from entering the NFL Draft.

He was denied by the Supreme Court and has been out of football since his last game with Buckeyes in January 2003.

After a standout freshman season, he was suspended for his entire sophomore year for violating NCAA rules. He was punished because Ohio State determined he accepted thousands of dollars in improper benefits and then lied to NCAA and school investigators.

Still considered a "top-shelf" running back, Clarett suffered through a miserable workout at the NFL Combine this February- he ran a 4.89 and 4.72 in the forty.

However, he improved that time to 4.67 in a private workout held for scouts just a few weeks later.

"Clarett is still a physically gifted prospect who has made many poor choices," notes one NFL Scout. "He has several issues that must be resolved before a team considers expending a draft choice on him, but he's a dominant running back at the top of his game."

Sources say the Cowboys would be interested in acquiring Clarett in the fourth round or later.
