The Dallas Cowboys traded up in the fourth round to select Virginia defensive end Chris Canty Sunday.

Dallas gave up its fifth round selection this year, along with a 4th round selection next year to the Philadelphia Eagles to get the Eagles fourth round selection this year, and a sixth round selection next year.

Chris Canty School: Virginia
Ht: 6-7.5 Wt: 279 40: 4.94 Year: 5Sr

Bio: Played in five games as a senior after dislocating his left knee in September and posted 30/7/1. All-Conference selection as a junior after totaling 104/12/4. Sophomore totals include 86/ 4/2. Involved in a bar room incident last February and was hit in the left eye with an unknown object. As a result, fifty stitches were required to close the wound.

Positives: Well-sized defensive end best suited as a two gap lineman. Heady defender who reads the action and quickly locates the ball. Moves well laterally, plays low with leverage and immediately redirects to the ball handler. Holds his ground against blocks and stays on his feet. Consistently focused on by opponents.

Negatives: Lacks a quick first step off the snap, has more built-up speed than a sudden burst, and does not flash on the scene. Gets wired in blocks and slow coming free. Must improve his hand technique and develop moves. Had durability issues throughout college.

Analysis: A big defensive end who can occupy several blockers at a time, Canty is perfectly suited to play on the left side in a 34 defense. Offers good upside for the next level, yet durability concerns will knock him into the draft's second day.
