What went through your mind when you got the phone call from Dallas saying that you were going to be a Cowboy?
Spears: "I almost started crying, but I had to keep my composure because I'm supposed to be the standup guy. It was fun. I enjoyed being on the phone with Jerry Jones and Coach Parcells and having them tell me, ‘Welcome to the organization.' That was big."
Have they discussed with you whether they want to play you more as a defensive end or an interior lineman, because scouting reports have said you can play both.
Spears: "They haven't, but I'm pretty sure that will be the next talk within the next few days. They just let me know that they were happy to be able to get me at 20 and to just be ready to go when I get there. Coach told me he wanted me there at 295 pounds and that's what I'll be."

Spears: "I think so. I really believe that it doesn't matter what scheme it is because we did so much at LSU and I prepared for a lot of things that I'll probably do at the next level dealing with Coach (Nick) Saban. It could be something different, but I don't think I'll lose by going to a different scheme."
Talk about how playing for a national title, playing for a coach like Saban and playing in the best conference in the country prepared you for life in the NFL.
Spears: "I think it's unexplainable, especially having a coach like Coach Saban and his staff that really gave you a professionally type of atmosphere and a professional feeling, where practices and meetings were ran professional. I think it gave me a head start. And then I'm going to be playing against some guys that I've played against already that just went before me. I definitely believe I can go up and make an impact on the next level, but it just has to happen. Talk is cheap."
Speaking of making an impact, what would the perfect rookie season be for you if you could plan it all out?
Spears: "Getting in the action and making plays, because that's what you're getting paid to do. But also winning games and possibly going to the Super Bowl, because we definitely have that potential."
