It was just 14 days ago that most draft experts were expecting the Dallas Cowboys to select either Shawne Merriman or Demarcus Ware with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Now, almost two weeks later, it has become crystal clear that the Cowboys made the right decision: Demarcus Ware.
Aside from his strong opening in last weekend's rookie mini-camp, Ware has also demonstrated he's a man of high character. He demands more of himself than even the high expectations placed on him by the organization and his head coach, Bill Parcells.
The same thing cannot be said of Merriman.
Merriman has been instructed by his agent, Kevin Poston, to skip the rookie minicamp this weekend unless the Chargers ammend their injury protection language.
Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith issued the following statement Thursday night:
On Wednesday, May 4, 2005, Chargers draft pick Shawne Merriman notified the club that he had retained a new agent, Kevin Poston. Mr. Poston then told the Chargers that he would not permit Merriman to participate in the team's offseason program (two Mini Camps and coaching sessions from May 6 through July 1) unless the team changed its standard injury protection language.
This injury protection language is intended to deal with situations when a player is injured before he is under contract. The Chargers' language is standard, and the Chargers have reached fair contract agreements with the only two players over the years that were injured before they were under contract.
We are disappointed that Shawne Merriman will miss the team's offseason program. We will open contract negotiations with Shawne's agent in early July. We look forward to Shawne being a Charger and joining the team in training camp.
Merriman will miss the camp and numerous coaching sessions leading up to camp. The Chargers plan on opening negotiations in July and the hope now is that he will make it into training camp on time.
While the Cowboys and Chargers don't square off until Sept. 11, it looks like one team already has an edge when it comes to the 2005 NFL Draft.
