Much has been made about the free-agent additions the Cowboys have made since Bill Parcells arrived three years ago.
Yes he has brought in a lot of former players from his days with the Jets and Patriots.
But what he has essentially done is overhauled a Cowboys roster that had gone 5-11, 5-11 and 5-11 during the three years prior to his arrival.
More evidence of the muck that Parcells inherited from Dave Campo surfaced last week when safety Tony Dixon signed a free agent contract with the Redskins.
What does that have to do with the Cowboys?
Well, Dixon's departure via free agency -- the Cowboys made no effort to resign him -- meant the team went zero for 2001.
With the Dixon gone the Cowboys have no players on the roster from the entire 2001 draft. Dixon was a second round pick behind quarterback Quincy Carter (second round). Defensive tackle Willie Blade was a picked in the third round followed by linebacker Markus Steele in the fourth, guard Matt Lehr in the fifth, defensive tackle Daleroy Stewart in the sixth and defensive end Colston Weatherington, defensive tackle John Nix and tackle Char-ron Dorsey all in the seventh.
Not only are these players -- who should be the backbone of the current Cowboys team as fifth-year veterans -- not on the Cowboys but all but Lehr will most likely not play in the league next season.
Lehr is a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Carter remains unsigned and still is dealing with a substance abuse issue. Blade, who was released three times by the Cowboys, suffered a torn Achilles while trying to make a comeback with the Cowboys in NFL Europe.
In addition, consider the following statistics:
* Linebacker Dat Nguyen is the only player left from 1999.
* There are no players left on the roster from 2000 and 2001, the drafts that should be the backbone of this team as fifth and sixth year veterans.
* There are also no players left from the 1995, 1996 and 1997 drafts after the free agent departure of linebacker Dexter Coakley (third round, 1997).
* Three players are left from 1998, defensive end Greg Ellis, tackle Flozell Adams and safety Izell Reese, who is back after playing with other teams the past three years.
