If you are a Dallas Cowboy fan, you just have to be thrilled once you heard the news Tuesday. La'Roi Glover (6'2, 285), one of the top free agents available this offseason, signed a five-year, $22 million contract with Dallas. That figure includes a $6 million signing bonus.
This season, he will earn $650,000 in base salary, giving him a salary cap figure of $1.8 million this season. "He's a natural fit for what we want to do on defense," owner Jerry Jones said in the press conference announcing the signing of Glover. "Many thought he was the No.1 or No. 2 player available in free agency. It was just too much of an opportunity for us to pass up."
Glover was originally a fifth-round pick by the Oakland Raiders out of San Diego State in 1996.
La'Roi will be added to a defensive unit that was ranked 4th overall in the league last year, but struggled mightly with the pass rush. The Cowboys only registered 24 sacks all season, just one short of a team record.
Glover by himself has registered 25 sacks with the New Orleans Saints over the course of the last two seasons, and his addition should pay immediate dividends along the defensive line. Glover will play alongside end Greg Ellis and tackle Brandon Noble. He will replace Michael Myers, who is a free agent. Greg Ellis led the team in 2001 with six sacks and 26 quarterback pressures.
Glover is a big, physical, and extremely quick player for his size. He'll cause a lot of havoc next year for teams in the NFC East- which is great news if you are a Cowboys fan.
By signing Glover, Jerry Jones can now focus his full attention on what he's going to do with the #6 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The pressing need continues to be the secondary with cornerbacks Phillip Buchanon and Quentin Jammer remaing as the top two targets. However, rumors continue to swirl around Valley Ranch indicating that Jerry might be leaning towards trading down to grab two late first round draft picks.
