First round draft pick Marcus Spears will miss the next four weeks of training camp with a sprained MCL, a groin pull, and a high ankle sprain, TheRanchReport.com has learned.
The sprain was termed a "mid-grade sprain" of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Spears suffered his multiple injuries on a play during Friday morning's practice session in which another player rolled over the back of his right knee while trying to chase down Anthony Thomas.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that Spears would likely miss four weeks, but that he could return in time for the season opener against San Diego.
"It was a terrible play. When we reviewed it after practice, we became even more concerned because it was really very much a possibility that he could have had the most severe injury," Jones said. "The good news, there's a chance we get him back for the opening of the season."
Spears is expected to eventually contend for the starting left defensive end position in the Cowboys new 3-4 defense this year.
As of now, the spot will belong to Kenyon Coleman.
