Saturday's Insider Camp Report

With growing concern over the Cowboys' back up quarterback situation, would it be too early for Bill Parcells to consider options outside of the organization?

INJURY UPDATES: Reserve tight end Dan Campbell appears to be on the cusp of returning to action within the next few days. Cowboys' head coach Bill Parcells said Saturday that Campbell will be back in full pads for this afternoon's scrimmage.

Campbell has been limited in practice after having his appendix removed 10 days ago.

"Campbell will be in pads this afternoon, he probably won't scrimmage," he said. "I've had guys play in 10 days ... so I'm not surprised. He has a tremendous baseline conditioning-wise."

Rookie DE Marcus Spears, fresh off yesterday's sprained MCL, was riding the exercise bike this morning.

Parcells remains somewhat optimistic on his return, saying, "Looks like to me it will be about two to four weeks, somewhere in there."

Sixth round draft pick OL Rob Petitti will have limited availability for today's scrimmage, but could play. Petetti suffered a "severe contusion" on his ankle earlier this week.

Also, rookie kicker Brett Visintainer will miss today's scrimmage with a bad back. As a result, the Cowboys are working out two additional kickers this afternoon.

QB CONCERNS?: Much has been made in Oxnard over the last week about the Cowboys' situation at back up quarterback. One of the rumors persisting on the practice fields has been that the organization may look elsewhere for a back up quarterback.

When pressed about the position during Saturday morning's press conference, Parcells said he is aware of potential candidates around the league should Tony Romo or Drew Henson fail to impress.

"I know who they are," he said. "But I think it would be too early to think about that right now. I'm going to give them plenty of reps and it will play out in the preseason."

Much of the speculation has surrounded Drew Henson, who hasn't appeared crisp through the first week of training camp. "He's going to get a chance here today. I'm not saying anybody's struggling," Parcells said.

KEEP AN EYE ON: The Cowboys are expecting rookie defensive end Chris Canty to practice at full strength for the first time on Monday. Canty's role with the defense will likely increase as a result of Marcus Spears' injury Friday.

Parcells said Saturday, "We'll find out Monday what he can get us."

Also, look out for Woody Dantzler, who has improved his play in recent days at strong safety.

"He played in Europe this spring and we are going to see if he can make the transition. Three weeks from now we'll know a lot more," Parcells said.

While he is improving, Dantzler is still facing an uphill climb when it comes to making the 53-man regular season roster.

QUICK HITS: Today's scrimmage will feature three sets of three possessions with three different teams (9 possessions) and should end up at 84 total plays ... The team will also work on goal line situations and the two-minute drill .... The scrimmage is a "stand up" scrimmage meaning there will be no tackling ... Back up QBs Drew Henson and Tony Romo will rotate between the second and third team ... Second-year cornerback Bruce Thornton appears to have caught the eye of Bill Parcells. "He had a good practice yesterday. I was encouraged by that," he said.
