Swift Cuts Trim Down Roster

It's that time of year again ... the Cowboys are trimming down their roster in an effort to get closer to the 53-man limit for the start of the regular season. More on those moves and much more are contained inside this report.

ROSTER MOVES: There were a host of roster moves announced by the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday. Among the announced moves were several cuts and a trade of an undrafted free agent.

WR Zuriel Smith, LB Roger Cooper, TE Mike Gomez, DT Jermaine Brooks, and S Derek Pagel were all released and OG Sam Wilder (as first reported by TheRanchReport.com) was traded to Tampa Bay.

"That puts us at 79," Parcells said of his trimmed down roster.

The Cowboys, just like every other team in the National Football League, can only have 53 players on their regular season roster.

Wilder, an undrafted free agent out of Colorado, was traded to the Tampa Bay for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

THIRD RECEIVER SPOT: The battle for the third wide receiver spot on the Cowboys continues to be highly contested.

Right now, Quincy Morgan and Patrick Crayton continue be the leading candidates. "It's a pretty good battle," Parcells said. "I think Crayton may have the edge right now."

Morgan, who reportedly had one of the best offseasons on the team before injurying his shoulder during the summer, has picked up his level of play within the last week.

Parcells continues to try and motivate Morgan however. Last week, he told the media he was "rooting for" Crayton.

PRAISE FOR BURNETT: Rookie Kevin Burnett continues to have a strong training camp, and Parcells confirmed as much again on Wednesday.

"He's doing well," Parcells said. "I'm pretty sure Burnett is going to play a lot. I'm not sure if he'll be a starter or not, but I'm going to find something for him to do."

Parcells said the only thing you have to worry about with rookies is giving them to much information. "You can't overload," he said. "He's got enough to do."

QUICK HITS: The Cowboys practiced in shells this afternoon, and had a "review" morning session, working on goal line, short-yardage, and redzone plays. ... Parcells said it does not mean anything regarding the back up quarterback competition that Tony Romo has been practicing with the second team all week. ... Andre Gurode is "even" with Al Johnson at center. ... Parcells said that Roy Williams is one of the most explosive tacklers in the league. ... Leonardo Carson did not practice Wednesday morning due to his knees bothering him.
