SPEARS RECOVERING NICELY: According to several sources, first round draft pick Marcus Spears is recovering quickly from his sprained MCL. Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said Friday that Spears could return to the practice fields, in some capacity, as soon as next week.
"I still think we are probably look at, I don't know this, but I'd say the earliest is next week," Parcells said. "but he's missed an awful lot. I'm not saying he's going to be back. You see him out here moving around. There's a chance he could be doing something. I'm just saying that based on what I'm observing.
"We are trying to improve our one-on-one ability in the backfield, receiver, and corner. We think if we can do that, that will start to show up in the games. That's what we are really focusing on this week."
FOURTH CORNERBACK? Parcells said Friday that Jacques Reeves is his fourth cornerback behind Terence Newman, Anthony Henry, and Aaron Glenn.
"I think he's the best fourth corner right now because he can also help us safety," he said. "He's going to really have to drop off the cliff before he's not here. He covers outside, and then we are working him as a safety in the nickel some.
"He's a very good special teams player. He's a Big Ten sprint champion. He's just a better player this year than he was last year. I don't think there is any doubt that he's going to be with us, unless something drastic happens."
LOOK OUT BARBER: Undrafted free agent running back Tyson Thompson led the Cowboys in rushing during last week's preseason opener against Arizona with strong outside runs late in the game.
Going into the preseason, Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells knew Thompson could excel in doing just that. However, now, he wants to see what he can do in between the tackles.
"I just think he needs game experience and improve his inside running,: Parcells said Friday. "He has pretty good ability, I don't think there is any question about that. He's got a good ways to go."
QUICK HITS: FB Darian Barnes, FB Erik Bickerstaff, TE Sean Ryan, and DE Marcus Spears will not play during Monday's game against Seattle. ... "We've talked to some people," Parcells said of the team's search for a right tackle. ... All three quarterbacks will play Monday night against Seattle, but that it hasn't been discussed any further as to which back up will play first, Tony Romo or Drew Henson. ... Marion Barber and Lance Frazier will get more return work Monday.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's just bad luck. There's nothing I can do about i." -- Bill Parcells on injured right tackle Jacob Rogers.
