Cowboys Sign Another Safety

The Cowboys signed S Rich Coady to a one-year contract on Wednesday.

The contract is worth a reported $540,000.

As speculated by TheRanchReport.com for weeks, Coady will be brought in to provide insurance at the free safety position.

Coady will likely immediately compete with Lynn Scott and Izell Reese for the back up free safety spot behind Keith Davis.

"There's an opportunity," Bill Parcells said of the signing. "We've got two weeks left."

Coady was most recently with the Atlanta Falcons, before being cut before the start of training camp. Last season, playing for the St. Louis Rams, Coady recorded 52 tackles, four pass deflections, a forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

He started five games last year, including three at free safety and two at strong. He has played for the Rams (twice) and also the Titans in his NFL career.

The free safety position is the lone question mark in the Cowboys' secondary this year. Dallas signed veteran cornerbacks Anthony Henry and Aaron Glenn to go along with Terence Newman this year. Also, Roy Williams returns as a Pro Bowl performer at strong safety.

Keith Davis is the current starter at free safety, but he has used primarily as a special teams' ace during his career in Dallas.
