Frustration Set In with Allen

As much as the Cowboys tried to downplay it last week, the frustrations of last Monday's meltdown against the Redskins combined with the short week, and the pressure to not get into a 1-2 hole got to them early in Sunday's 34-31 victory against the 49ers.

It was most evident in the second quarter, when guard Larry Allen attacked kicker Jose Cortez following a missed extra point. Allen grabbed the facemask of Cortez and hit him twice in the helmet, snapping his head back.

A low snap from rookie Jon Condo was to blame, but Allen took his frustrations out on Cortez.

"The snap was a little low, and I wasn't able to (keep) my steps and I hooked it a little bit," Cortez said. "Even with the low snap, I've got to make those."

Allen eventually apologized to Cortez.

Cowboys coach Bill Parcells didn't see the altercation between the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Cortez and the 6-3, 325-pound Allen. Owner Jerry Jones did - and sympathized with Allen's frustrations.

"Larry thought, you know - it's an extra point," Jones said. "You ought to be able to get that (in there) if the ball's in on someone's helmet.

"I understand Larry's frustration. The whole team should have seen that because that shows he cares. He's passionate."
