Cowboys Sign WR - Scouting Report

The Dallas Cowboys signed wide receiver J.R. Tolver (6-0, 200) to the practice squad on Wednesday.

The latest Scout.com scouting report on Tolver:

Ht: 6-1 Wt: 202 40: 4.58

Bio: First team All-Conference selection who led the league in receiving during his senior year at San Diego State, posting 128 receptions for 1,785 yards and 13 scores. Team's leading receiver the prior season with 63/878/2. Broke into the starting lineup as a red-shirt sophomore and caught 62/808/1, again leading the squad in receptions.

Positive: Productive college receiver who's taken advantage of a passing offense the past three seasons. Strong and defeats jams at the line of scrimmage, stays low out of his breaks then positions himself to make the reception. Comes back to the ball, adjusts well and uses his frame to shield away opponents. Displays a good sense of timing, effectively uses the sidelines and will lay out to make the difficult reception. Smart and constantly finding the open spot on the field, displaying good wherewithal and awareness.

Negative: Lacks top end speed, does not beat opponents down the field, nor can he run to the deep throw. Seemingly lets the pass get inside him and clutches the ball against his frame rather than extending to catch the pass away from his body. Takes his eyes off the throw, peeks up the field and the end result is dropped passes.

Analysis: Size/speed numbers are a concern though you cannot dismiss his production or feel for the position. Obviously best suited for a spread offense but could also make it as a team's fifth wide out.
