If Bill Parcells tells me that Terrell Owens will be a Cowboy next year, is that enough to write is as fact?

How about if the Dallas coach tells somebody else TO will be a Cowboy in '06? Can I write it then?

How about if circumstantial evidence, collected by someone (me) with 25 years of experience sniffing around such stories and dealing with those involved -- including friendships with the two witnesses involved -- leads someone (me) to conclude that Parcells is willing to "wink'' a "maybe'' at one of my witnesses. And then said witness writes it as a "logical guess''? And then moments later comes another "wink'' and another "maybe'' and another of my witnesses "logically guesses'' essentially the exact same thing?

Can I write then that Terrell Owens will be a Cowboy next year?

There is a limitless vat of gook to spoon through here when it comes to TO. Is he insane? (And I mean that not as a jab, but literally and clinically.) Is he a teammate that will bring down his next franchise, too? Does he stand for everything that is wrong with sports today? But today we save those questions for another day. (And maybe save them for Dr. Phil, too.)

Immediately, there is a bigger, better issue: How did America's biggest and best football writers, Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Chris Mortensen of ESPN, possibly stumble onto the same "logical guess'' on the same mid-November day regarding the same top-secret subject? If Bill Parcells tells me that Terrell Owens will be a Cowboy next year, is that enough to write is as fact?

My contention: Because Bill Parcells told them it was OK to do so.

Yes, I'm saying Bill Parcells "allowed'' them to put Dallas dead in the middle of the chase for Owens' '06 services.

Understand the rules here -- oh, and you'll have to take a leap of faith with me when I tell you that these sort of wink-wink behind-the-scenes/not-for-attribution/kinda-off-the-record/"don't-tell-anybody-I-told-you-this!'' interviews happen all the time. Parcells cannot come right out and say, "Yup, we're going after TO. It's controversial, and saying so openly might disrupt my '05 team, and yes, it is against the rules for me to day this because that would be tampering, but yup, we're getting TO in '06.''

No sir, he can't do that.

He can do this: He can escape the bright lights pointed at him by the local dipspits in the D/FW media (his opinion of us, not necessarily mine) and retreat to his Valley Ranch cave, to his phone, to his messages. Where there are a few calls from reporters.

There is one from Peter King, wanting to know Bill's thoughts on T.O.

There is one from Chris Mortensen, wanting to know Bill's thoughts on T.O.

Now, why should Parcells pick up that phone? There are perfectly good reporters in D/FW to give off-the-record-but-very-helpful hints to, right?

Wrong. We're dipspits, remember?

Bill Parcells is a New Jersey guy. Peter King speaks that language, and has done so in his relationship with the coach since Parcells came to power with the Giants some 20 years ago. Plus, he's Sports Illustrated, baby! So why give any information to the Podunk, Texas Tribune? Bill Parcells is an ESPN guy. Chris Mortensen speaks that language, having supplemented his coverage of Parcells as a coach with his work alongside the retired Parcells as the network studios. Their bond is deep enough that when it came time for Parcells to get together with Jerry Jones to discuss possibly taking over the Cowboys two years ago, it was none other than Mortensen who helped broker the meeting. Plus, he's ESPN, baby! So why give any information to KTEX-TV Channel 68?

So most of the rest of us have to play a guessing game on T.O.'s future. Some of us guessed "Cowboys'' because of Jerry Jones' willingness to take on flashy troublemakers. Some of us guessed "Cowboys'' because Parcells has worked with problem children before, to great success, with everyone from Lawrence Taylor to Keyshawn Johnson.

Some guesses were way off, and silly, really; A Fox analyst said TO would have "nobody'' bidding on him. ESPN's John Clayton predicted that "only three teams'' would end up being interested in T.O. (Attention John: When preparing a report on Parcells' Cowboys, always walk across the hall to Mortensen's office first.)

Others did it as I do below, with educated speculation and my own gathered "hints.'' Maybe I talked to a source or five within some teams. Maybe I just put 2+2 together. And of the 32 teams, I'm able to cross off the last three to deal with him (the Eagles, 49ers and Ravens, bridges having been torched). And we're able to cross off teams with money concerns or coming contract issues (the Bengals, the Titans, the Steelers).

Then there are the teams or cities that take a moral stand (goodbye, Patriots, Browns, Texans, Panthers, Bills and Packers) and the old-schoolers (farewell, Giants and Chargers). Some teams don't have wide-receiver needs (the Lions, Rams, Cardinals, Colts) or just got done dealing with wide-receiver issues (the Bears, Bucs, Jaguars). Others are in disarray (the Vikings, the Saints).

We've just narrowed the list of T.O. Sweepstakers to, what, nine teams? The Jets, the Chiefs, the Redskins, the Raiders, the Seahawks, the Falcons, the Broncos, the Dolphins and. ... (drum roll, please!) your Cowboys. In some of those nine cities, people involved have announced "no thanks.''

But in only one of those cities, Dallas, has the owner said, "yeah, maybe.'' Jerry Jones has on numerous occasions since T.O.'s dismissal from Philly knowingly left the door ajar in public conversation about Owens, while also carefully pointing out that any specific mention could bring tampering charges.

And to my knowledge, in only one of those cities is the coach comfortable enough with two national reporters to tell them a damn thing about what he thinks.

In Dallas. With Parcells. And with Peter and Chris.

It may sound odd, but these two terrific reporters -- both of whom I've known for years and respect greatly -- are essentially "Parcells Guys.'' And it is easy for me to envision them on the phone with Parcells, asking for hints, looking for signs, begging for even a "All The President's Men'' clearing of the throat as a way of confirmation.

"Bill, between you and me,'' MortenKing might ask, "how about Terrell in Dallas next year?'' "Hmmmm-mmmm--ggggrrrr-hmmm,'' confirms Parcells. Why else would King and Mortensen climb out on the prediction limb? Why risk their reps? Why suggest it with any force, with any confidence, at all?

Because Bill Parcells -- with a gurgle or a wink or a "harrumph'' -- told them they could. Because his "harrumph'' is a hint to Dallas' 2006 intentions regarding Terrell Owens.

Can I write it likes it's going to happen? Yes. Because two "Parcells Guys'' did.
