The New England Patriots signed free agent wide receiver/kick returner Zuriel Smith Friday.
Terms of the deal were not available.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Smith was originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth-round of the 2003 NFL Draft (186th overall). Smith spent his rookie season in and out of the lineup for the Cowboys as a receiver, seeing action primarily as a kick return specialist. He has played in nine career games, bringing in three catches for 46 yards. He has also returned 23 kicks for 495 yards (21.5 avg.), and 30 punts for 212 yards (7.1 avg.).
Smith did not play in 2004 or 2005.
He was released by Dallas in September of 2004 prior to the season, then re-signed during the team's offseason (January 2005). The Cowboys placed him on waivers in August of 2005, when the Giants claimed him then released nearly two weeks later during the preseason.
The Patriots will send the former Hampton player overseas to participate in the NFL Europe League.
