Cowboys Target First Round LB

A year after making the switch to the 3-4 defense, the Cowboys are on the market for several key upgrades- however one of the most important offseason acquistions would have to be at linebacker, where the team hopes to get a little younger and also a little bigger.

Enter Ohio State LB Bobby Carpenter, a massive linebacker (6-3, 255) with outstanding athleticism and a knack for making the big hit. has learned the Cowboys spoke with Carpenter at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on several occasions, which clearly indicates significant interest.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Carpenter's father played for Bill Parcells in the 1980's with the New York Giants.

As a senior with the Buckeyes, Carpenter finished with 49 total tackles, including 10.5 for loss and eight sacks.

Carpenter is projected by many draft experts to go in the first round. He is currently ranked by as the No. 4 outside linebacker available this year.

NFL Combine Notes
* Measured in at 6'2 ½/256 pounds.

* Ankle problem will keep him from working out, but will be ready for his Pro Day.

* Said the ankle is coming along but it's still gets sore the day after he works out.

* Has played inside linebacker earlier in his career but feels he's best on the edge.

Analysis: Possessing first-round computer numbers, Carpenter is beginning to improve his production on the football field and meet the expectations placed upon him. Offers great upside for the next level and has the ability to develop into an NFL starter.
