UFA Analysis: WR Miles Austin

Does former Monmouth wide receiver Miles Austin have a realistic chance of making the Dallas Cowboys' 53-man regular season roster? We take a look at the answer to that question, and more, in this report!

Full Name: Miles Austin School: Monmouth (NJ) Pos: WR

Ht: 6-2 Wt: 215 40: 4.52 Year: 5Sr

Bio: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference honors since his sophomore campaign. Posted receiving numbers of 49/1,004/11 during his senior campaign after 47/859/9 as a junior.

Pos: Nice-sized receiver effective running after the reception. Fluid releasing off the line, offers the quarterback an opposing target and displays soft, natural hands. Extends to make the reception away from his frame, displays good eye/hand coordination and gets to make the tough catch. Takes a big hit then holds onto the ball.

Neg: Lacks sharpness running routes. Cannot beat opponents in a foot race. Gets marginal results blocking.

Analysis: Consistently productive the past three years, Austin needs time adjusting to NFL competition.

Chances of Making the Team: 25%. Austin did not have the strongest showing at the Cowboys rookie mini-camp earlier this month, routinely being called out by the coaching staff after dropping passes. On play in which he caught a pass on a crossing route, he cut back across the field to avoid defenders .... prompting another lecture from receivers coach Todd Haley, who reminded Austin in no uncertain terms that the best way to score points is to "go north- south, not east-west." At 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds, Austin has the size to turn up field and take on defenders at the next level. However he struggled against bigger defensive backs, like Pat Watkins (Florida State) in press coverage situations. Austin has the size to play in the NFL, but he must show better concentration and more consistency to even have a chance of making the practice squad.
