Wednesday QB School Notes

What was Deion Sanders doing at Valley Ranch on Wednesday? Details on Sanders attendance at the 2nd day of QB School, the two new rookies from Ohio State, as well as the Cowboys' situation at wide receiver and on the offensive line are contained in this report.

* 4 players missed Wednesday's QB school, including Char-ron Dorsey (calf strain), Pete Hunter (slight hamstring pull), Duane Hawthorne (slight hamstring pull), and Robert Thomas (calf strain). All injuries are considered to be minor in nature.

* Deion Sanders made his way out the practice fields this afternoon. "We brought Deion to talk about the bump-and-run technique, he's the best in the business. We'll have some explayers come in from time to time. He was kind of an added bonus today," said Dave Campo.

Sanders was brought in at the request of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

* The heat and humidity wasn't as bad this afternoon, and consequently the energy level picked up considerably over yesterday's practice.

* Rookie FB Jamar Martin worked extensively with the first team offense today, even though he's missed almost all of the other mini-camps held throughout the summer. "I'm always looking to compete and I'd like to play as much as I can. I'm just going to work as hard as I can and see where that gets me at the end," said Martin.

Martin was filling for Robert Thomas, who missed today's practice with was termed, "a slight calf strain," by Dave Campo.

* CB Derek Ross rebounded from yesterday's heat related cramps to have an astonishing day. Ross looked suprisingly strong in his ability to blanket some of the faster Cowboy receivers, and he also pulled in an interception in one of the one-on-one drills.

Ross, who fell all the way to the third round, has something to prove to all the teams that passed him up, "I have a lot of teams that I want to prove wrong, and that's what I plan to do," said Ross.

* Andre Gurode continues to be "the man" on the offensive line. Gurode has been the starter at center, while Matt Lehr is getting his work in at guard. Expect the two to be positioned in that manner through the beginning of training camp in San Antonio.

Interestingly enough, Dave Campo has commented several times over the course of the past few days that he is extremely anxious to get a look at Gurode in pads. He wants to affirm his belief that the Cowboys could go with a rookie on the offensive line this season.

* Things are certainly start to heat up at wide receiver, as players start to position themselves at a run to make this team. "We've got a lot of young guys out there right now battling to make this team, Ken-Yon, Randal Williams, and whole bunch of other guys" said Dave Campo. "We'll probably keep up to 6 of them at receiver, with that last guy also being a special teams player."

WR Jeremaine Copeland has looked productive recently, as Campo noted in his post-practice interview that all he does is "catch the football."
