With former South Carolina running back Demetris Summers now on board with the Dallas Cowboys, the team has a plethora of options at running back. Can Summers make the 53-man regular season roster? We examine that question and more in this scouting report.

Full Name: Demetris Summers School: South Carolina Pos: RB

Ht: 6-0 Wt: 215 40: 4.63 Year: 4Jr

Bio: Led South Carolina in rushing during the 2004 season totaling 88/487/1. Numbers the prior year included 124/638/3. Dismissed from the program in '05 after twice testing positive for marijuana.

Pos: Strong ball carrier who runs with an aggressive style. Sees the field, waits for blocks to develop then follows them. Breaks tackles or slides off defenders into the open creases on the field.

Neg: Not an elusive back who creates. Marginally productive with limited playing time.

Analysis: Flashing ability as a sophomore and junior, Summers displayed the skills necessary to play at the next level. Off-the-field incidents are concerns, yet his physical skills will get him a look in camp.

Chances of Making the Team: 25%. Make no mistake, Demetris Summers has the vision and overall skills needed to compete at the NFL level. However his work ethic and off-the-field decision making are in question after a turbulent career at the University of South Carolina. In addition, the Cowboys already have Julius Jones, Marion Barber and Tyson Thompson ahead of him on the depth chart at running back- which means the team would likely have to get rid of one of those players to keep Summers on the 53-man regular season roster. If Summers keeps his head on straight and remains in shape, he can legitimately compete for a roster spot. If not, he won't make it to July.
