NEWSMAKER: The advantage of drafting players who are represented by agent Jimmy Sexton, who also happens to represent coach Bill Parcells? When it comes to negotiation time, the coach and the agent seem to always be on the same page.
So it is with first-round linebacker Bobby Carpenter, who has zeroed in on a five-year contract with lots of zeroes: More than $7 mil guaranteed, and at least $3 mil more available in bonuses, according to a source.
Carpenter, the 18th player chosen overall, should be on the field for Saturday's first practice, along with the rest of Dallas' picks, all of whom are now signed.
WHO'S HOT: Rookie Skyler Green is noticeably slimmer than he was in April, when the Cowboys selected the LSU product in the third round with the hope that he could be an elusive return man. Green, now below 200 pounds, will get first crack at the punt-return job, and could be part of a thrilling battle for time as the kick returner with Tyson Thompson.
WHO'S NOT: Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis – or is that Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis. … or is that EX-Cowboy Greg Ellis – is, on the surface, doing himself no favors with Parcells by announcing that "I still don't want to be here. … I'm not looking forward to it.''
On the other hand, that is probably the point: Get on the coach's bad side enough to exit the Cowboys, whose 3-4 scheme is not Ellis' idea of a perfect fit.
The irony: Didn't Dallas draft Ellis (instead of Randy Moss) because they wanted a solid player who would never create problems?
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Basically, Bill Parcells is a d---.'' Channel 8 sportscaster Dale Hansen, explaining why he made a point in the press conference to direct questions at owner Jerry Jones and not at Parcells. Channel 8 is also trying to make a point about the restricted coverage of the NFL now allowed by the league – and the further restrictions placed on the media by Parcells.
TIMEOUT FOR T.O: Bothered by Terrell Owens' not traveling to SoCal on the team plane? Fine, but save some of your venom, too, for Drew Bledsoe. The QB, like Owens, had permission from Parcells to meet the club at camp.
Seriously, anybody that makes too much of this right now has too much time on his hands. Given recent air-travel news, I don't care if Owens and Bledsoe are on my flight; I just want to make sure David Hasselhoff and Mo'Nique AREN'T on my flight.
OFFBEAT BEAT: As I checked into the Ventura Beach Marriott, I noticed on a bench a tempting item: A three-ring notebook, full of laminated pages that included Cowboys scheduling tidbits. I guess I'm mellowing, because there was a time when I would have confiscated the apparent Cowboys playbook and burrowed inside for information I could subtly pass on to you, the reader.
Alas, I didn't swipe the book. I did peek inside, noticed that it was the lost scrapbook of an apparent female Cowboys groupie, and turned it in to the hotel lost and found.
MISCELLANY: The Cowboys' consideration of signing veteran offensive lineman Adam Meadows out of retirement should not be taken as a slight against the tackles now in camp, I'm told; it's more of an exploratory thing. … Rookie DE Jason Hatcher is already being buzzed about. Keep in mind, Friday was simply an episode of "The Underwear Olympics'' (guys running around in gym shorts), but Hatcher is certainly physically impressive. … If you, as a member of the Cowboys audience, think you were holding your breath Friday waiting for Parcells to endorse Keith Davis (which he did), think how blue the face of Keith Davis himself has to be turning?
