Bye Bye Peterman

IRVING, TX. - In an effort to get closer to the 53-man regular season roster limit, the Dallas Cowboys announced four new roster moves Wednesday, including former third-round pick Stephen Peterman.

ROSTER MOVES: The team released former third-round draft pick Stephen Peterman, as well as undrafted free agents LB John Saldi and CB Quincy Butler. Dallas also released tight end Erik Jensen, who was signed as a free agent just two weeks ago.

Peterman, in particular, was especially hard to swallow considering he was a former third round pick in the 2004 draft.

Parcells of the move, "I just think (Cory) Procter is a better player."

The team also announced a trade with the New Orleans Saints.

The Cowboys have traded linebacker Scott Shanle to New Orleans for a conditional pick in the 2007 draft.

MAYHEM ON SATURDAY? Parcells said he's a slightly concerned about facing the unconventional defensive scheme the 49ers run on Saturday night.

"This is the only week of the whole year where we don't play against the same kind of defense," he said. "So this is going to be a little bit of a mental task for both our quarterbacks and our offensive line.

"They are doing a lot of stuff. And we don't have a lot of time getting ready for this game. I'm expecting we could have some problems here."

PARCELLS ON ROMO Following Peter King's blurb during Monday night's game against New Orleans suggesting a quarterback controversy could be in the works in Dallas, Parcells offered the following comments:

"I don't really respond to what these people say," said Parcells. "Did I ever say that Romo was going to be the starting quarterback? (I'm) Trying to use him. Trying to see what I've got here. Trying to give Jerry and this ownership an idea and to trying and give me confidence of using him in the game if I need to."

Parcells also talked about what would happen if he decided to start Romo over Bledsoe.

"I'd talk with Drew first," he said. "But we are not at that day right now. But I am happy with Romo's progress and I'm sure many of you can see why.

"I think he's an improved player. He's a bright guy but there are things he doesn't get a hold of yet. He's getting the sense of the pressure there is to perform at that position. He's starting to get a sense for it. I think he likes it."

Both quarterbacks are expected to play similar roles in Saturday's preseason game against San Francisco.

QUICK HITS: Parcells forecasted fifth-round pick Pat Watkins as a "significant contributor pretty quick." ... Terrell Owens is not expected to practice Wednesday. ... Parcells offered some encouraging news on WR Patrick Crayton Wednesday ... "Crayton took the boot off. We are going to get him moving around today. We are hopeful that it goes well."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm in the talent acquisition business. We got Ryan Fowler for nothing. We got Jacquez Reeves in the seventh round. If you are right on half your draft choices, you are doing pretty well. You want me to cut my losses or you want me to keep him?" - Bill Parcells when questioned about releasing former third-round pick Stephen Peterman.
