Updated Team Needs

The signing of free-agent guard Leonard Davis and the return of right tackle Marc Colombo has the Cowboys going into the draft without any pressing needs and looking to take the best available athlete.

With that being said there are always areas of concern or positions they will always like to fill -- namely the offensive and defensive lines. So the Cowboys will address those positions at some point in the draft.

But look for them to focus on a receiver or safety with the first two picks.

The receiver position is one of the strongest positions on the team with starters like Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens. But both players are also 33 and 34, respectively.

The Cowboys have not drafted an offensive player in the first round since tight end David LaFleur in 1997. That could change if a game-breaking receiver is available like a Dwayne Bowe from Louisiana State. The Cowboys know they need to start developing a lead receiver for the future. And the players currently behind Owens and Glenn -- Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd -- are more complementary players than big-time go-to guys.

Of course, the need to get a receiver could be tabled to the second round if a special player like Florida safety Reggie Nelson falls to them at 22.

Nelson is a do-it-all safety who would be a nice complement to Roy Williams at strong safety. Considering this draft has a number of quality safety prospects, it's a need that can be satisfied in the second round with someone like Texas safety Michael Griffin.

A receiver that could be available in the second round is South Carolina's Sidney Rice.

TEAM NEEDS: 1. Wide receiver: In Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn, the Cowboys believe they have one of the top receiving tandems in the league. Both topped 1,000 yards last season. But they will be 34 and 33 next season, respectively, meaning the Cowboys need to start developing a lead receiver for the future. This will be a point of emphasis in the draft.

2. Free safety: Patrick Watkins was a typical rookie starter last year at free safety. He had his moments but he also was victimized for big plays. The Cowboys like his potential and think he has the chance to develop into a solid player. However, it important that the Cowboys improve the position immediately because of the desire to take strong safety Roy Williams out of coverage and use him close to the line of scrimmage. If Florida's Reggie Nelson is available with the 22nd pick or Texas' Michael Griffin is there in the second round, those would be the picks for the Cowboys.

3. Defensive tackle: The Cowboys like nose tackle Jason Ferguson but they have no depth behind him. They need help here.
