Stanback is a little over 6'2", weighs 216 pounds and has been clocked at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash before his senior season at Washington was cut short by a foot injury; he had surgery and did some workouts for scouts, although not a full workout. His biggest asset is his versatility – he played some wide receiver and returned kicks at Washington before settling in at quarterback, ran track for the Huskies and even got drafted last year by the Baltimore Orioles.
If he stays at quarterback – which doesn't seem likely – Stanback has a chance to be sort of a Tony Romo clone: good-but-not-great size, decent arm strength, a quick release and good mobility. He throws very well on the run, and is one of those natural leader types who commands immediate control of an offense.
But all indications are that the Cowboys – which drafted college quarterback Patrick Crayton and made him a very capable professional receiver – plans to do the same with Stanback.
The first step, of course, is getting him fully healthy.
The foot injury he suffered did require surgery, and there are differing opinions about whether he'll be ready for training camp – the team's rookie mini-camp appears out of the question. Once he's back to full speed, Stanback's transition to wideout could prove to be a steal by the Cowboys. Volatile receiver Terrell Owens is entering the second year of his three-year deal, but his age, erratic behavior and health could convince the team that the 2007 season should be his last in Dallas. If that's the case, Stanback might be a solid replacement. He has good size and speed, and excellent hands. He understands offenses well, and has an aggressive running style that makes him hard to bring down.
If he can get healthy and make a full transition to receiver, he just might be Owens' eventual replacement.
Do the Cowboys have a "Slash"?
