Training Camp Analysis: RB

After an off-season of trade rumors that included the Cowboys acquiring Chiefs superstar Larry Johnson for either Jones or Barber, the Cowboys will head into training standing pat at running back.

After an off-season of trade rumors that included the Cowboys acquiring Chiefs superstar Larry Johnson for either Jones or Barber, the Cowboys will head into training standing pat at running back.

Considering that Jones rushed for over 1,000 yards and Barber tallied more than 600 yards and 16 touchdowns, the Cowboys are not hurting at the position.

However, there may be a shuffling of the deck with Barber getting a chance to supplant Jones as the starter.

Jones is in the final year of his contract and this could be his last season with the Cowboys if he doesn't have a big season.

Meanwhile Barber proved a year ago he could handle the load, especially in the red zone where he reached double-digits touchdowns. He also averaged a very respectable 4.8 yards/carry.

Tyson Thompson returns as the Cowboys' third-team back in 2007. One of the fastest players on the team, Thompson can also provide help in the return game.

Look for rookie Deon Anderson, a sixth round draft pick out of Connecticut, to push Polite and Hoyte at fullback.

New offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has said this offseason he plans to incorporate the power running game into the Cowboys' offensive philosophy. If that turns out to be the case, look for Barber, not Jones to go over 1,000 yards this season.
